Grew up on TOS, thanks. My VHS, until stolen by Kurtzman, were well worn. These one-word opinions being spit back and forth is making me understand the nature of the divide between people who grew up on the previous generations of Trek and the people who think that this third-generation stuff is where it's at. They don't actually expect anything from the show-- they are just glad that it exists.
And, no, I do expect something of the show-entertainment. Not philosophy, not moralizing, not a guide on life. Entertainment, characters, like Pike, I can invest in. That's it.
Star Trek is Entertainment first and foremost. It tackles some interesting human stories in the form of drama. It exists in a heightened reality at times. It is not a source of inspiration for me.
TOS is the best Trek. The rest are easily ignored.
There's my unpopular opinions.
