Spoilers Shouldn't the Farragut disaster have happened already?

Nah, They would transfer officers and crew from other ships to fill most of the vacancies. Folks move up and move on in the military, even after a war.
Besides...aside from all the nameless Redshirts, that's what? Maybe 5 Senior officers that need replacing in total? ;)

I think Starfleet has a pretty deep bench. It won't be a ship full of noobs.

This. You pull a few here and there from various other units, and maybe ask for some volunteers among personnel on a shore rotation. You could re-crew her in a matter of weeks, depending on where she was laid up.

Then put her through a quick workup to let the new crew acclimate to the 'Farragut' way of operating and her new CO / XO, then turn her loose on her next assignment.

Just rewatched Obsession. So, the facts of what was said:
11 years before, so the incident happened 2255, which is 4 years in the past where SNW is at.
Also, was his first deep space assignment, so the incident happened in 2255, maybe a few months, maybe upto a year after Kirk was first assigned to the Farragut. But he was just out of the Academy, he might have been a Lt jg right out of the academy, and he's at the upper end, probably on the cusp of Lt Cmd by the SNW time frame of 2259.

So, to the original question. YES it has happened, but it was years ago. He apparently has been on the Farragut his whole service life.

TOS S2 Obsession occurs in 2267 so 2256. ;)

I always wondered given that Kirk is now first officer, I wonder if in the next five-six years we find out that he actually got to Captain the Farragut for a time prior to him getting command of the Enterprise.

Well, he was captain in the Alt-Future seen in the Season 1 finale.

Yes, but that was during the timeframe when he should have been commanding the Enterprise.

I can't decide for head-canon purposes which I like better: the idea of him holding a Saladin Class destroyer as his first command, or the backstory with the Lydia Sutherland that another author posited.

It was intentional early in TOS that he captained "a destroyer-type" vessel before the Enterprise. That, obviously, is not part of onscreen conitnuity.

Wouldn’t a destroyer, by definition, be a small vessel? Probably not even a full Captain in command.

And as I said, the Farragut looked to be quite large, almost as big as a Connie.
The real world USS Zumwalt is commanded by a Captain.
Specs from wiki are
Displacement 14,564 long tons (14,798 t)[6]
Length 600 ft (182.9 m)
Beam 80.7 ft (24.6 m)
Draft 27.6 ft (8.4 m)

Small doesn't just include size, but weapons, crew and capability.

Commands in the modern military are structured in part by size of people under an officer's command and so a smaller crew on a ship could still warrant a lower ranked officer.

The Saladin class was always called a destroyer. Must be larger than the USS Archer, if the Archer is only a scout.
