One regret: Hemmer wasn't still around to sing a song that had references to cold temperatures in it.

You can tell a mantle, he has two funny stalks
His white hair and nethers, always look so boss
Funky with his body, he's light as air
Call him Mister Ego, dig his signal gains
You can best believe that, he's a mantle man
He likes to be the leader, he undresses the sand
Hey! Hey! Hey, hey, hey!
Mantle, mantle man (mantle man, yeah)
I've got to be, a mantle man (I've got to be)
Mantle, mantle man (yeah)
I've got to be a mantle! (Alright)
Mantle mantle man (yeah, yeah)
I've got to be, a mantle man
Mantle, mantle man
I've got to be a mantle! (Alright!)
(Ugh! Mantle, baby!)
Body (body), body (oh yeah)
Body, wanna feel my body (body, wanna feel my body)
Body (baby), body (alright)
Body, come and thrill my body (body, come and thrill my body)
Body (baby), body (alright)
Body, love to funk, my body (body, love to funk, my body)
Body (baby), body (uh)
Body, it's so hot, my body (body, it's so hot)

All Those eps you mentioned had similar plots but didn't old like those earlier stories. .

Then you've never actually seen The Enemy Below, with Robert Mitchum?

Here's a brief log-line from IMDB. See if you can guess which classic Trek episode was lifted almost beat-for-beat from this film?

During WWII an American destroyer discovers a German U-boat, and in the ensuing duel the American captain must draw upon all his experience to defeat the equally experienced German commander.

Yeah I saw the movie. It was on earth and on the sea. Human fighting humans..Star trek was in space and they were fighting romulans. The movie Aliens was in space. The SNW was in space. The main villains in aliens were aliens with big teeth. The main villains in the SNW episode were aliens with big teeth. The survivor in aliens was a little girl named newt. The survivor in snw was a little girl that looked like newt. Lots more similarities in the snw/aliens example.

Indeed. Between her song and La'an's "How Does It Feel" solo, my admiration and respect for the characters just deepen. They make these people so much more complex, and I love it.

It might me time to change my paradigm" Is such a "Treky" lyric, I love it.

Indeed! Lots of great Trekkian lingo in the songs, making it uniquely Star Trek. I know some folks say it doesn't live up to "Once More With Feeling" from Buffy, but it's not Buffy, it's not that unique blend, it is it's own. Songs that include inertial dampers, initializing systems, everything stable, paradigms, and so on, THAT is Star Trek to its bones, and I think it works so very well.

This episode has done an incredible job lifting my spirits. I've been worried about a lot of things, especially lately, and this episode came along and just pulled me up with it, it's infectious.

Oh, and the Klingon K-Pop band works so much better on the soundtrack, because there's no real pause after the connection is severed, the song just continues, and it fits very well, IMO.

Edit: one more thing: Anyone who listens to "Status Report," and hears where people start singing in multiple harmonies (especially the "apologies" moments), that's what I hear every day. It was so pleasing to hear it out loud for once.

And Chapel singing about being accepted into a fellowship. Love it!

I've listened to the track 3 times now in the car driving to/from work and will a fourth time when I leave here in a few minutes. Hell, I've watched the episode itself 4 or 5 times now! I just love pretty much every aspect of it.

I visited my parents the other day, told them about this (they go see live musicals a lot) and they really enjoyed it too. (They said they may watch the rest of the series too.)

I can get why some don't like it (after watching, or trying to watch it) and that's fine. But I loved it. (Though, I liked musical theater and worked on them in high school. (Not performed.)

Same here. I've listened to the soundtrack all the way through about 4 times already, seen the episode 5 times, and I'm up to watch #190 on the Klingon K-Pop clip. It was just so well done, and you can see the heart and soul poured into making it a truly fun, entertaining experience.

I agree it's fine if people don't like it, I understand, there are Star Trek episodes I can't stand that other people love, but for me this is just a pitch perfect episode, pun completely intended.

Right.

All of that's simply evading the actual issues, all right? Your assertion that an episode like this is less directly derivative of an earlier, well-known film than "Those Who Wander" is of Aliens is flat-out wrong.

Just my opinion. At times watching the gorn episode I felt like i was watching aliens. I had that feeling pretty quick when they entered that base. It was not hard to tell they were giving us a aliens story. The other examples like Balance of Terror I didn't feel like I was watching The Enemy Below regardless of the story.

*Phaser banks, deflector shields all at the ready*

The K-Pop bit works for me now having listened to the track and watched the episode so much. It fits better now as.. "weird" as it is. (Was the anomaly Autotuning them as well?)
