Spoilers Well, I guess we know now... (SNW "Subspace Rhapsody" spoilers)

That still works. Either Kirk has never heard of the Gorn, or what the Metron called a Gorn doesn't square with what Kirk is familiar with. The second interpretation has quite a bit of latitude.
Exactly. It's presumed to mean no familiarity but it might not be. It's not like they had time to discuss the attack, or the attackers until Kirk was whisked away.

^ True dat.

Actually I'm wondering why David didn't suspect it to begin with. He clearly knows his mother once dated Kirk, but doesn't think to put two and two together?

Perhaps he didn't want to.
An absent father can play havoc with a child's perception of that parent and denial can come into play.

There is an excellent SNW - the fanfic, not the show ;) - story about how David comes to terms with being Kirk's son. It's called Prodigal Father. It's on SNW 4. Linky

(The story assumes that Carol didn't tell David that Kirk was his father.)

Even when Spock and Uhura first see the Gorn on the viewscreen a little later, you could interpret both reactions as being one of familiarity.

Kirk seems the only one unfamiliar.

The others never have the opportunity to discuss it with him. And the Gorn captain appears physically different to the younger forms.

It stretches but doesn't break.
Spock and Uhura sure didn’t act like people familiar with the Gorn

That type of Gorn may not have been seen by Starfleet before, thus Spock is curious. Also he is very much aware that all he can do is watch.

Not sure they react at all. Well, Uhura screams when Kirk vanishes. Their next scene is
SPOCK: Have you tried overload?
SCOTT: Aye, sir. It does no good.
SPOCK: How about bypassing the transformer banks? Feed the impulse engines directly.
SCOTT: I tried that, sir. Nothing.
SPOCK: Lieutenant Uhura, have sensors learned anything about the nature of the force which holds us here?
UHURA: No, sir. They report they definitely emanate from that solar system ahead.
SPOCK: No indication of its composition? Gravimetric? Magnetic? Electronic?
UHURA: Nothing, sir.
They seem focused on escaping the stasis field the Metrons have them in and later on watching Kirk fight the Gorn.
I guess Uhura could have screamed because she knew Kirk was facing a Gorn.

Honestly I'd be fine with them retconning parts of TOS. Let's pretend the Kelvin and "normal" universes merged somehow or something. lol

Arena has been shredded to death due to SNW. I mean they basically turned them into the Xenomorphs from the Alien franchise.

Though I would love for them to do like DTV movies where they basically Reboot/Remake Kirk's five-year mission and pick and choose which missions to retell.

I mean, you do you, but I don't find it far out of line.

But, I don't take TOS literally.
