"Trials and Tribbleations(DS9)" is utterly pointless? That's a first, or at least the first time I've heard someone place it so low on their scale in a very, VERY long time. So long I can't even recall the last dismissive comment I heard about it.

I'm not actually defining Filler episodes as being bad episodes. They can be good.

I don't even think Shades of Grey is that bad.

There are good filler episodes in other shows 'Fly; in Breaking Bad, 'Sacrifice' in Battlestar Galactica, 'Join The Club' in the Sopranos.

All good episodes, but not really related to the overall theme of the relevant series.

This episode of SNW, like in my opinion, far too many recently, is not relevant to what I believe the overall theme of the series should be, i.e. Exploration of new cultures and planets.

It doesn't mean the episode is bad as I've said, i just think there have been too many episodes like this which in a limited run series is not a good idea.

Who established that as the series theme?

Really? Its in the voiceover in the credits?
Why else have it?
If the voiceover of,

'Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds; to seek out new life and new civilizations; to boldly go where no one has gone before!' is not suggestive of being the theme of the show then I don't know what is.

No, that just some nice prose.

Well if we are going to define it by what Gene thought Star Trek was we might as well write it all of past season 1 of TNG,

TOS wasn't even about exploration ever week. "Space Seed" is literally about 72 superhumans from over 200 years earlier who get found, thawed out and try to take over the ship. Not one alien. Not one shot of an alien planet. Just humans interacting with other humans who have five times their strength.

Or it can be about falling in love with a woman from three hundred years ago or an android.

I also thing 'Yesterdays Enterprise' and 'Timeless' are incredibly overrated. Aren't opinions fun!

Tell me, someone, what is a moment of unassailable space exploration weirdness in TOS that exceeds in entertainment value what we're getting every week on SNW?

Not that there weren't memorably weird moments. One of my favorites was the alien pipe-cleaner people in "Catspaw." I'd say the Balock reveal was cool in that way. The Horta? Granted. There's a scene in the opening act of "Return To Tomorrow" with a nice little frisson of strange new worldliness, hmm?

There aren't that many, really. Beaming down to yet another Planet of the Silver Lame Togas does not automatically evoke the drama of exploration of the unknown. There are a handful of episodes of TOS that make all the paper mache stage-bound planets worth the time and expense, and not really more of them in the seven years of TNG.

Aren't opinions fun!

Not trite, dull claims that SNW is somehow not living up to the mantle of Star Trek, no.

I'd add "bottle episode" into the list of phrases people use incorrectly when describing TV shows. Especially lately.
My favorite Star Trek episodes are bottle shows.

Well the exterior model of the TOS shuttle was smaller than the set.
Not by THAT much. And mostly by height, IIRC.

How big would you say that shuttle bay is?
So... 150-200 feet wide? What was the original? 70 feet?

Gotta say, adding the landing target from the Star Fleet Technical Manual does make me feel yummy.
