Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

Mmmm....Axanar would be my vote

Don't give me hope!

Prelude to Axanar is amazing, but "Axanar" has not been finished and may never be finished. I thought you were saying that Axanar is finished and published on Youtube, and this long dirge waiting for something sour and inevitably disappointing is finally over.

I'll cancel the parade.

What exactly is amazing about Prelude to Axanar? The story is basically another pew pew Trek. The acting is fine but nothing we’ve never seen before. The CGI, while well done, is all rips from JJ Trek. The only thing that I think is unique from a Trek perspective is the format of the story, which truly is nothing unique in any other storytelling.

Im sorry but when people were fawning over Prelude and Alec Peters years ago, I just never got why it was considered fantastic.

I think people just liked Prelude to Axanar because he got Tony Todd and J. G. Hertzler, and they both acted their hearts out in the clips.

Also, it came out during the period where there was absolutely no new Trek, meaning people eked out their need for a Trek fix with things like fan films.

The film itself is not that unique. It clearly borrows from Abrams, as well as utilizes cliched aspects of Trek like war with the Klingons, grand speeches and heroic captains. It even swore a little.

What I think it did though was claim to be closer to what people remembered about Trek, primarily DS9, and they liked it. That, coupled with the dissatisfaction with Abrams Trek getting characters "wrong" and the lack of new shows made Axanar a convenient rallying point.

The biggest side of that was the idea that they represented the "proper Trek" and not the "pew-pew Trek" of Abrams films, and created a new frontline for the "Tru Trek" wars. That and the constant poking the CBS bear over copyright so that they could appear the hero standing against the corporation.

Ultimately, I think it just became a punching bag for either side of fan divisions.

Not to divert too far off track but my first experience with Axanar was dealing with morons on Facebook (yes, that was my first mistake) who were so distressed with Into Darkness that they constantly compared it to Prelude to Axanar. It was a little obsessive. When I finally broke down and watched it, I will admit that probably had a negative impact on Prelude for me. Looking at it now, I can appreciate what they were trying to do. I still don’t think it’s that remarkable.

I don't think it's that remarkable, save from an effects standpoint which is one place fan films often struggle.

But, it just happened to hit at the right time in terms of fan response. People disappointed by "Into Darkness" (I still remember those debates and it was disheartening) ran right in to something that just looked right in terms of uniforms and tech. And that's really what it comes down to.

I remember the debates over Discovery and how it was "so dark" and Trek never dealt with darker themes, like drug use or long term trauma or whatnot. And then a Pike fan film comes out, very much going for the 60s style, but that Pike is a chronic alcoholic, has to be guilted in to serving again by his father in law, and then the man is killed. It's dark, as dark as Discovery, but because it "looks right" it gets a pass.

It's absurdity in its highest form to me.
