Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

My friend wants to know why Picard season 3 is not available in 4k for him? I do not care as I watch everything on my phone which I think could be SVGA. My friend has been traveling around the world for 6 months with limited time and internet, so he has only just started watching this season.
Looking at some of the behind the scenes pictures, it looks like season 3 at least was digitally captured at 3.6K. But then like many films, post production was completed in 2K. Main advantage to an upconverted 4K release would be the far deeper color range offered by Dolby Vision and the source having more room to breathe.

They'll upscale it to 4K in five years, to make sure we double-dip.

I have no way to prove this, but I think they'll also eventually re-remaster TOS and TNG to 4K. Yet DS9 and VOY will remain in SD, and ENT will remain at 720p. But, if one those later legacy shows gets upscaled, it'll be VOY.
Ahh I'm hoping a DS9 and VGR remaster happens this decade. It'll probably come down to the health of the franchise in a few years plus the direction of streaming. ENT is the one I see getting stuck. It's crazy on the rewatch seeing the vast difference in picture quality between seasons 1 and 4.

If they were smart, they'd remaster DS9 and VOY for 2024. It seems like next year will be pretty light in terms of content. Perfect opportunity to fill the gap.

ENT was the first HD Trek and I can't imagine you can upgrade it all that much compared to the earlier series. 8K maybe? But even at 4K the early-to-mid 2000s digital effects start to show their failings.

ENT was filmed on digital cameras at 1080p, so they have no film source to go back to do anything higher res.
Visual effects scenes IIRC are 720p.

Ah, resolution. There comes a point where the human eye just can’t distinguish the difference. I’ve seen some higher end 4K screens and they’re impressive. But a lot of that comes down to HDR. I’ve yet to see 8K content but I can’t imagine people are really going to be able to tell the difference.

Regardless, you’re going to have to do some hella lot of work to make DS9 and VOY work well for 4K screens.

I think most people won't actively switch to 4K. They're happy with HD.

The only reason most people get a 4K TV is because their regular HD TV finally broke down and either 4K will be all they have in stores or some pushy salesperson will talk them into getting said 4K TV. My answer to every pushy salesperson ever is, "I'm all set." In my head I think, "I know you're only doing your job, but no, I don't need XYZ, and I don't want XYZ! If I wanted that, I would've said I was looking for it!"

The first three seasons were shot on 35mm film. The main benefit of a hypothetical redo would be completing post with current production techniques, plus cleaning up some of the SD or 720p CGI.

Yeah some of ENT's VFX is as low as 480p, right up till at least the 3rd season Some shots look pretty grim in places compared to the live action footage that surrounds them.

He is watching it on Amazon Prime. Like I said, I do not care as I do not even have a TV, but my friend likes to watch things in 4k on larger screens for some reason. He also has surround sound, but he said that this show sounds fine so far.

Scratching my head at almost every sentence in this post.

I know I should be a better person, but my blood pressure rises every time I see people saying they watch the contemporary series on tablets or DVD. What's wrong with these people.

I remember in the 90s I knew the series' technical limitations and the inferior delivery systems. We all awaited HD, and now people want to waste it?

These people should be arrested!

OK maybe just a severe tongue lashing.

I'm impatient and want to watch the episodes when they launch, which means first thing in the morning, which almost always means watching on my tablet while on the bus to work.

We actually do have a TV, but my wife hides the remote from my son all the time - which generally means from me as well since she always picks a new place for it. I can go weeks at a time without using it.

OK ok, you're excused

Sometimes when I'm visiting my family when a new episode comes out, I'd rather have some peace and quiet and watch it on my laptop with headphones in my bedroom than trying to watch it on the TV in the living room with my parents and sometimes my sister constantly talking over it, and inevitably getting into fights over how I'm always called inconsiderate and selfish if I do the same when they're watching something. Or the timeless mom classic of "I don't care you're watching TV, I just decided that this carpet needs to be vacuumed right now."

I still watch on VHS as well.

Currently don't have a TV nor the funds or space to use one. Nor does HD appeal to me.

I await my tongue lashing because thus far the idea of higher resolution doesn't appeal to me. If a story is good, it's good at lower resolution and higher resolution.

Picard was nominated for 7 HCA Awards today, making it more likely it will get major Emmy noms tommorow.

The last time a 1hr Trek drama was nominated was during the phenomenal 7th season of STNG in 1994.

Both seem like rewards for better previous seasons.

If you're keeping score, that's the third contemporary Trek show that might get an Emmy nom for best series in its class, following Short Treks and Prodigy.

I didn’t even know what the HCA was until a few minutes ago. Is it often a predictor of the Emmys?
I saw the Lower Decks is up for an Animation award.

Also maybe not everyone is an early adopter and wants the latest and greatest technology. If it works and you are happy with it why be forced to change because it might be considered trendy. I'm more then happy with 1080i or 1080p on my devices and my tablet is 1920x1200 so not sure where that resolution fits but things look very crisp on it and it's an IPS panel
