This all gives me memories of the "Alden Ehrenreich isn't a remotely passable younger Han Solo" debate in 2018. And almost none of those memories are good.

Alden did a great job, considering what was asked of him. Was he a young Harrisson Ford? Of course not. But he was a very believable young Han Solo.
Also: Childish Gambino as Lando was the most brilliant idea Lucasfilms ever had
Yet Wesley HAS to be Shatner. Even a lot of Pine critics eventually gave up and just let Pine's Kirk be who he was.
Mostly because Pine had moments of pure Shatnerisms strategicly sprinkled throughout his performances.
Wesley, so far, decided to stay away from that. Personally, I respect that. I would prefer something a little bit more Shat, but I respect his decision and agree that it might be too early for that.
Indeed. I can imagine Wesley getting closer to Shatner's version of Kirk without going full impression. And, that was Pine's approach as well. He wasn't doing an impression of Shatner, but he wanted to respect what had been done while bringing his own energy. Which is what an actor is to do! Imagine being bound to one image of a character!
Ideally, I would have preferred no James Kirk until the show was on for at least three years (except references via his brother maybe). But he's there now and the actor's choices are growing on me. (And I'm a sucker for a tragic romance.) But I want to see Pike as captain of this ship for a good long while first. And I see no indication that we won't get that.
Wesley has to be more shatner because he is meant to be a younger version.
speaking of star wars? Ewan McGregor Obiwan did become Alec Guinness Obiwan. I could see the similarities by episode 3.
Pine's Kirk is an alternate kirk, that bar scene i posted we know kirk is a reckless drunk and a jerk because he was raised fatherless. his journey is different. however by Star Trek Beyond I will argue that he is very close to shatner's kirk
Look, at the end of season 5 Wesley magically transforms himself into Shatner, just like Peck magically turns into Nimoy, thanks to a mixture of genetic manipulation and plastic surgery. Everything less than that is a canon violation and creates a paradox that will have destroyed the universe 10.000 years ago.

I like Wesley's version of Kirk. He is most certainly not doing a Shatner impression, which I quite like.
