Paul Wesley's incarnation of James T. Kirk

I consider it too early to judge myself, given we've had SNW Kirk in exactly two episodes so far, and one of those was an alternate version of him. I'm keeping an open mind. :D
Actually BOTH episodes were an alternate version of him...
Okay, the 30 second video tablet call at the end of S2 episode 3 was 'Prime Universe Kirk'... ;)

Aside for hoping La'an eventually gets the D, one thing I would really like to see is the early years of his and Spock's friendship.

And not with them doing the old "at first they hate each other" thing, but just two dudes being bros.

I think it's clear that very early on Kirk spotted that Spock's pithy responses to his wry humour were evidence of the Vulcan's own well-developed sense of humour. Both enjoy being challenged intellectually and it's easy to see why they would bond.

If you look at most of Kirk's exes, they are often fiesty women with a great line of witty repartee. He has a type. It's why Rand sticks out like a sore thumb - she's very subservient to Kirk (far less so with Sulu though). Compare Helen Noel to Rand and imagine how different Dagger of the Mind might have been if Rand had featured.

So, I'm hoping that if the characterisation remains solid, we will see their humour as the hook that helps them develop their huge mutual respect.

It's hard to separate the modern bloated, publicity seeking caricature of Shatner from his Kirk these days. I have less desire to see his work. Did he create something that endured, sure but he left a lot of debris in his wake. Nevertheless, admittedly his Kirk is an icon.

Pine was a marvelous Kirk. He picked what worked without doing a comedy routine based on Shatner. I almost prefer his performance to Shatner.

Wesley had no hope of coming into this and being perfect and accepted. His first performance as written on the page, was one-note, very serious. In the second he became Kirk without having to mimic either former actor. A wise decision I think. What was important is we felt his charm and we were sad when he died.

Actors get pigeonholed. Iconic characters feel as if they can never be replaced, but acting is just pretending to be someone else, it's the definition of the job. Anyone is fair game, even icons.

Get over it if it bothers you.

I am now firmly in favour of Wesley's Kirk just because everyone keeps criticising his body. I have noticed that if a man's body is getting nitpicked, it's because he was made to be a sexual object, which was definitely the case with S1 TOS Kirk, always tearing his shirt off. (I'm also kind of sick of the nobody-asked-for comments about Christina Chong's body because they sexualised her in that episode but, I suppose that should be its own thread).

I also agree that I didn't really need to see Kirk at all yet at this point in the series. We get it, this is a TOS prequel.

I'm not happy with Kirk constantly turning up on SNW because it seems like an attempt to push out Anson Mount. But I did like the Kirk appearances I did see, particularly "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow".

speaking of which I love the fact that Kirk likes poutine. :D
