Nyota or Christine?

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Was anyone upset that Spock wound up in a relationship with alt Uhura and not alt Chapel?

For those who've forgotten, Christine is name-checked once during '09, when Kirk is suffering from his vaccine induced allergic reaction (along with a visual of a female that could be her (https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wik...ate_reality)?file=Enterprise_medic_7_2258.jpg))

She is also mentioned by Carol Marcus in Into Darkness thusly:

CAROL: You're much cleverer than your reputation suggests, Captain Kirk.
KIRK: I have a reputation?
CAROL: Yes, you do. I'm a friend of Christine Chapel's.
KIRK: Christine, yes. How is she?
CAROL: She transferred to the outer frontier to be a nurse. She's much happier now.
KIRK: That's good.
CAROL: You have no idea who I'm talking about, do you?

So back to my question: do you recall being upset (at the time) that Spock and Uhura are an item?

Not at all. Fit nicely with early TOS episodes.

I realize not every relationship has to be the same in both universes, mind you.

Is Nyota a better fit for this iteration of Spock, what with losing his mother, his homeworld, and so on?

I think Nyota is a better fit because of how the relationship is set up. Nyota has a skill based in logic, as well as Sarek's own remarks that marrying Amanda was logical. If Spock serves in Starfleet, surrounded primarily by humans, exploring a relationship with a human is logical.

I thought it was cool because it was something new and different that we hadn't seen on TOS. Drove home the idea that this was a whole new timeline that wasn't bound to the old "canon." That it provoked gasps from the audience was exactly the desired effect. The whole idea was to rock the boat and give the new cast a clean slate to build upon.

Plus, with all due respect to Majel Barrett, Uhura was always a bigger deal than Chapel.

I do wish Chapel at least made a facing forward, recognizable appearance, though. (The blond med staffer in '09 isn't confirmed to be her, though likely, as McCoy addresses her by name.)

Carol's comments to Kirk on the shuttle seem to suggest he might have been involved with her at some point, though to him she wasn't memorable. Either that, or he's not really paying attention to the conversation.

Nyota and Spock were OK for me but I wished the movies had Chapel too.
She could be Leonard's best friend or at least his loyal nurse.
What am I upset about is we did not get Chapel at all.

I never thought Spock would pair with any Human. In one episode of TOS, Uhura flirted with him, but she was just having some fun. In one other episode Chapel severe crushed but soon crashed and burned. Spock was just on drugs when he spocked Leila Kalomi.

In ST III, Zombie Spock ponfarred Saavik but that was the Genesis Wave talking.

Finally, the Kelvin movies were all really too weird.

Then AI came and produced this image:

I consider it canon.

Why is Counselor Troi there?

That image is hilarious!

I was okay with Chapel being absent from nu-Trek; she was largely a non-entity in TOS except in a tiny handful of episodes.

The Spock/Uhura romance was, for me, just one more point of irritation in a sea of them with JJ-Trek. Actually, I had far larger issues with other aspects of nu-Trek than Spock/Uhura, but it was still a gigantic eyeroll and struck me as totally out of character for Spock, new timeline or not.

The Spock/Uhura thing was a bit out of nowhere to me, but hey, new universe, new rules. They didn't seem to have any idea what to do with them as a couple after the first movie, though.

I never had issue with it. We see Spock desires a relationship but a sense of duty gets in the way. He is possibly further drawn due to feeling more of a connection to Earth and humanity due to the loss of Vulcan.
