“I think we could do a movie, a ‘Picard’-based movie,” he said. “Now not necessarily at all about Picard but about all of us. And to take many of those wonderful elements, particularly from Season 3 of ‘Picard’ and take out of that what I think could be an extraordinary movie. I keep telling people and mentioning it, and so far there’s been no eager response, but it might well happen. And that would be I think a very appropriate way to say, ‘And goodbye folks.’
Picard III was the perfect ending... but if they offer one more..?
My kneejerk reaction is "
of course I'd want to see more of these characters!"
But then if I actually think about it for any length of time, I think... could any other ending be more satisfying than where season 3 left things? It's probably better to count my blessings and leave things where they are, with everyone reunited happily and playing cards.
Was season 3 perfect? No. Could there be more stories to tell? Always. But would another movie leave them in a better place than we left them here already? Probably not, so it might not be worth it. And not measuring up is not the only concern, there's a risk it could be notably
worse. We could be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. No, I think I'm content with season 3 as the definitive ending.
I think I'd be much happier to simply see some of them make brief appearances in future Star Trek media, nothing that rocks the boat too hard, just reminders that they're still around in this universe and that life goes on. Perhaps the Enterprise-G is given reason to visit Data who is shown with Soji, or Jack calls his dad for advice on a testy diplomatic situation, or Riker contacts Captain Seven with orders from command. Let season 3 remain the TNG cast's ending, but don't forget that they're still here. Use them when it makes sense, but don't try to give them another ending.
Spitballing but perhaps instead we have a
Star Trek Legacy movie to kick off the start of the series, and it includes some TNG characters participating in that story without stealing center stage from the G crew.
