The Maple Leaf Lounge

My personal opinion is grounded by the fact that Doug Ford has a history with Toronto. None of it is good, none of it is respectful to Toronto's strengths.

Which is ironic because I always feel Ford makes decisions first and foremost for Toronto more than any other city in the Province. It's always been Toronto this, Toronto that.

Beau's has officially cancelled Oktoberfest. They say it's because of inflation but the sale to Steamwhistle went through last year so....

I also see people claiming they shut down the Vankleek Hill Brewery and all brewing is now in Toronto. I don't know the truth of that, but I do know they no longer offer tours of the Vankleek Hill location, just the taproom and gift shop.

Interesting. I had forgotten they got bought by Steamwhistle, although I did notice that there are now more beers under the Steamwhistle banner, leaving me to believe those Beau's brews got rebranded. I guess I'm indifferent. I only ever got Steamwhistle at restauraunts serving it, but the unique thing is that they were a brewrery with a single beer and doing it well. Beau's on the other hand I felt was rather expensive as they were setting themselves apart by going the organic route early on, and honestly other than seeing the 4 tall bottle package they have for sale at the lcbo from time to time, I haven't been a big fan of their beers.

This is frustrating though, because the the craft beer market is small enough in Ontario that mergers can absolutely affect the survival of other breweries due to shelf space. At least it's not one of the macros like Molson or Labatts.

I keep thinking that he's trying to punish Toronto for some refusal to be the property of his family.

So it looks like Maxime Bernier failed to win a seat (yet again) in the byelection in Portage-Lisgar today. In fact, with the results as they stand right now, the PPC vote share went down (to 17.3%) from its showing in the 2021 general election (21.6%). (IIRC, this riding was either the best, or one of the best, showings for the PPC in that election.)

I've read some commentary online speculating that this result throws the very future of his party into question. On one hand, it would be great if the PPC just went away, so we didn't have to deal with their right-wing nuttery every election. But on the other hand... those few percentage points they consistently pull from the CPC sometimes comes in really handy. :shifty:

Maybe they'll go through another rebranding phase. Sure sounds like they need it. The last one sure went by without a hitch...

I was kinda hoping with Bernier not disappearing after the last election cycle maybe we'd see the reversal of the reform/conservative merger. Stop the further right turn of the cons, bring them back to the middle, and have the hard right have its own party. Then Pollivere won the leadership....

I will soon be heading to Calgary for the Stampede, so I thought I would read up on the flood that happened 10 years ago. They thought they were gonna have to cancel...but the whole thing went ahead as planned. It blew me away how much damage they had to clean up, and how they managed to pull it off. But they did it! :techman:

They couldn't have anything in the actual Saddledome though 'cos the damage was just too great. So they moved all of the concerts to other locations.

Air quality warning in effect in Ottawa-Gatineau this morning. You only have to look maybe a block down your street - or across a soccer pitch - to see it!

Yeah, I hear Montreal has the worst air quality in the world right now. Locally, the air quality was very bad yesterday, and you could smell the smoke everywhere, the sky very hazy. Today's pretty much the same.

Shortly after the Bell layoffs we get the fantastic news for Canadian media that Postmedia and Nordstar are now merging.

Good old Bell.

"Waaahhhhhhh local news cost us $28 Mil over five years, we can't afford it!"
"Good news investors, we posted profits of $780 mil this quarter!"

And if that happens, barring an editorial miracle or five, I will likely end my digital subscription to the Star.

What I will want at that point will be an Ottawa-based and Ottawa-focused digital news service with Atkinson Principles-style editorial policies to support in its stead.

Anyone see SNW yet?

I was on that boat Friday evening. Right before it they walked past a place that just opened, Friends Fries. A Michelin star German chef opened a chip stand. Best fries I have ever had.
