News Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves

Did anyone realize while watching that one of the groups in the competition was made up of the characters from the cartoon? I didn't.
Yes (but I'm old). :)

I enjoyed the film quite a bit; and I couldn't believe when they had the quick visual cameos for the characters from the 1981 Dungeons & Dragons cartoon series.:wtf:

When they showed one of the groups and there was the odd colored purple cowel/cape that went all the way to the ground, I was thinking no it couldn't be that character; and then they had quick glimpses of them running through the maze portion; and at the end they were all in the cage in the middle. I didn't see Venger or Dungeon Master though.

But I think they did a good job with the film and they approached it the right way, because like many others it came across the way many a tabletop RPG session with my friends went when we played D&D.

I though having Holga visiting her ex and talking about their problems was a nice touch, as it seems like they genuinely loved each other at one time but their personalities ultimately didn't quite work out. Marlamin seems to care a lot about Holga as a friend, even though they're no longer a couple. Sometimes RL is like that.

That just happened to be full of characters who talk and act like they stepped out a James Gunn movie. What an amazing coincidence!
I really don't see where there was anything unique to James Gunn about the way it was done, it was just your typical, snarky, goofy banter. Gunn is great at that kind of thing, but there's nothing about it that is so unique that nobody else can do it.

Right. Gunn didn't invent that style. What was unique was that an 80s/90s style action movie/series group dynamic was applied to a Marvel movie. If anything, Gunn got that from someone like Wheadon.

I've never played "Dungeons & Dorks," as a high school buddy of mine once called it, and the recent trend of watching streams/web shows of other people playing such games sounds like torture. That said, I'm always up for a good high fantasy romp, and am a particular fan of the unfairly maligned Your Highness, so I eagerly gave this flick a try once the critics gave it solid marks - and, it's pretty great! It's not quite a classic of the adventure genre, like Raiders, The Mask of Zorro, The Princess Bride and LotR, but it goes right up there with Pirates... Dead Man's Chest, The Eagle, and Clash of the Titans (2010) in the next rung down. There are a few too many reactive line jokes, and some of the brawls run a bit long, but the 2 1/4 hour runtime mostly flew by.

I've always liked Chris Pine, but I don't like his Trek trilogy, thought Wonder Woman was seriously weak sauce, and struggle to remember much of anything about Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, so it's nice to finally have a movie of his I really like. Michelle Rodriguez also seems more energized than she has in many a Furious entry, and Hugh Grant is delightfully hammy. I'd welcome another entry from this creative team, though I hope they focus on a new band of characters each film, with only small appearances by characters they've used before.

Grade: B+

Saw it, enjoyed it. Some good heartfelt moments, good action, FX were solid. Familiar enough with some of the location names due to pop culture osmosis over the decades, and they name dropped all the ones I could probably name if put on the spot. The characters from the cartoon was a nice easter egg to boot. Wouldn't mind seeing more with this gang, but feel like their stories wrapped up pretty well. Like Gaith I'd give it a B+

I've got to disagree with you there, the characters were big part of what made the movie work so well, and I'd hate the see them relegated to nothing by cameo or supporting roles in future movies.

I think it comes down to performance and I’d welcome them using the cast more as a company and let those same actors play all new characters in the sequel - as if they’re playing a session planned and written by another dungeon master

They want to capture the D&D feel, kill off one of the characters, and have their brother/sister join the party, played by the same actor, except with a slightly different name and haircut.

I remember the Viva La Dirt League NPC spoofs that were making fun of that slightly different name thing. They had a character who kept dying and he would come back with the same appearance, but his name would change by like a letter. Like Fogrim to Bogrim to Mogrim, etc... lol

BTW, for anyone with Paramount+ D&D: Honor Among Thieves is now available to watch. (Or at least in the US, although not sure Paramount+ exists outside the US anyway)

So a Paramount + exclusive? Any idea for other services? (NO, I don't have PP)

Agreed on all points.

Have you seen "All The Old Knives" ?

I don't know when it will be streaming anywhere else. There was a digital purchase option that's around $20 US from Amazon and some other places that do digital movie purchases I guess.

I did see that there's a D&D tv series coming to Paramount+ so it may possibly be exclusive there (or at least where Paramount+ exists)

For Top Gun: Maverick, it was three months between Paramount+ and Prime Video. But that might've been a specific deal made for one movie instead of standard operating procedure.

Have you seen Hell or High Water?

Love the Honest Trailer for this, they make no bones that they're struggling to find much to be snarky about
