News Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Amongst Thieves

D&D is very social now. The main virtual table tops system openly advertise themselves as "safe spaces"--which means if you are making anti-gay/trans comments or racist jokes--or even making fun of the other players you're booted. The gamerooms in my town are all very similar. They're a safe spot where non-binary teens and young adults can hang out and have fun. Also, the rules themselves are written with a little more sensitive language and provide opportunities for a range of characters. I'm guessing that Musk is going to do to the virtual table top rooms what he did to Twitter and he's going to republish books that aren't written with all colors and genders in mind.

I should cite my source regarding the latest edition as the most recent edition I've read it 3.5. My statements about the writing and text in the more recent books comes from conversations with High School students who play it.
Oh no, the wokeness of it all! </s>

Seriously, that's awesome. The first part, that is, not the potential purchase by the musky husky.

D&D was always for nerds. It was written by nerds who played strategic combat games and added a fantasy element to their games. Smart girls, trans and non-binary teens are now the kids who fit that niche. They're not remaining in the shadows--they are coming out much earlier. Straight smart girls are now taking their place and not afraid of showing how intelligent they are. I listen to my kids and their friends who play. They all have an active social life at school--they are a pretty diverse group, but the thing they have in common is they aren't part of the druggie kids and don't like hanging out at those parties. Some of them are on sports teams and their team mates know they like playing D&D.

It's nice to seee that the hobby has gotten a wider social appeal and acceptance. When i was a kid it was often misunderstood as a cult, in the Southern US even accused of satanic practices, but as gaming in general has gotten more popular and some high profile gamers like Vin Diesel and Joe Manganiello openly and enthusisatically talk about their hobby it seems there is a shift going on.

It's still not where it should be and maybe it never will but it's nice to see giving people a space where they can be completely themselves without being judged.

Same here in Canada. My D&D lunchtime sessions in junior high were cancelled.

D&D used to be the guys Trekkies could make fun of. ;)
Until Traveller, Starships and Spacemen and Space Opera hit the Tabletop RPG scene in the late 70s into the 80s.

Then the Superhero comics needs came into the fold with Villians & Vigilanties and Champions (still have my original saddle stitched edition from 1981.) :whistle:
