In the late 90s definitely. OZ and THE SOPRANOS were HBO's first hour-long classic dramas, and definitely not Clark Kentish in approach.
SUCCESSION's not for boy scouts either. But they all beat watching CSI ripoffs with under-35 blonde supersleuths.
It's not good behavior*. It's HBO.
(*unless Tom Hanks steps in.)
Liked the ones with Nicole de Boer and Alyssa Milano. Hubba hubba.
Seriously though, I think my favourite one is from Season 3, called Tempests.

Is that the one with Will from Will and Grace, and the whole "Which reality is the real one?" plot?
I believe 4 episodes were produced for season 3 but got back for some reason. (Much like what UPN did to VGR's first 2 seasons.) The reason, I don't know.
But the numbers fit... 22 episodes per season, except 3 and 4, with 18 and 26.
Showtime was, and still is, a premium pay service, so that reason doesn't fit as easily as UPN's, who were directly competing with the big 4 (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) for more eyes to watch them when the fall season started.
Underrated. One of the best anthologies out there. They have several multi-parters, and Amanda Plummer won an Emmy for one of those multi-part stories. This is a little hidden gem I just discovered. I never really cared for it that much when it was on TV but now having the full set I find myself enjoying this series. Currently on season 2 and some of the episodes are really great.
Like Trek they have 40 odd minutes to tell a story but the thing I find with some of the stories is that they are good, really and feel like they could have been longer IMHO.
For instance Worlds Apart was a story I really liked and it felt like had it been a two parter which was very rare in this series it would have been great. I felt they had a really good story to tell but didn't get to tell it all, or finish it properly and I wanted the astronaut rescued.
