I first encountered Star Trek via the movies, and I'm probably not the only one.

But this isn't a movie, it's the third season of a sequel show to another TV series and four movies. I don't think it's been a big draw for newbies.

I agree with you here. The early movies were a cultural phenomenon, posters everywhere, widely reviewed. The last Star Trek movie that got even close to that level was First Contact, IMO. Picard is buried on a minor streaming service.

One question that has been constantly in the back of my mind throughout this season.... Has this show brought on any new fans? I don't think it has.

I can't imagine that this show creates new Star Trek fans in significant numbers.
References, memberberries, rehashes, and an overall weak story with mystery boxes.

And even old fans don't show up en masse for the memberberries.

Star Trek Picard drops out of the Paramount Plus Top 10 almost every week.

Yes, a show should definitely appeal to its long time fans, but it should also work to bring in new ones. The obvious nostalgia bait of the cast, the villains, the Enterprise-D, are all clearly a big deal to fans. But, imagine you have never seen a single episode of TNG, or any Trek for that matter. Is there anything in this show to appeal to the audience at large?

Discovery certainly made efforts to grab new audience members. Prodigy is almost entirely based on getting new and younger fans into the franchise. Even Lower Decks has some broad appeal with its humour. Strange New Worlds definitely makes an effort to get new fans on board, but Picard..... I don't think so.

And maybe that's fine for THIS show. But so many people are throwing around the idea that they want "this" to be the blueprint for the franchise going forward, and I cannot disagree more.

To copy this would do nothing but stagnate the franchise. We need new fans because we're not getting any younger. To appeal only to Trekkies will be a surefire way of killing this franchise.

With 9 out of 10 episodes outta the way, I think I can safely say that "More Terry" and his plans for a "Star Trek Legacy" series are exactly what this franchise doesn't need.

I think you are missing the whole point of S3 which is precisely to be a final chapter for the TNG cast. Terry said that TOS got a proper send off in the movie "The Undiscovered Country" and he wanted to give the TNG cast the proper send-off that they never got. That is the purpose of S3. Picard S3 does not need to bring in new fans since there is plenty of other Trek like Discovery and Prodigy that can do that.

Respectfully, there is plenty of nuTrek for new fans, can't classic Trek fans like me get 1 season of 10 episodes? I don't think that is too much to ask.

Man, idk. If this had just been the stuff with them and the ship, plus the Shaw sacrifice, then this would have been a 10. All of that was excellent and hit for me. I thought this show was great for the most part till around 6, then 7 stopped the momentum, and last week was a mixed bag. Same with this week. I hope they stick the landing for the most part but I just don't know.

The Jack stuff, the Borg cube stuff, and the Borg scenes with the ships really brought it down to about a 7 for me. I'm not annoyed they're the villain but I just don't think this a compelling story with them from what we have seen. I don't know how they can wrap the Jack part of the story up in a good way, especially when we have the TNG cast to deal with and the Borg taking over Starfleet.

Troi running off and leaving Jack alone and then disappearing for most of the episode is a bad look on her part.

I was honestly sad to see Shaw go, even though it lost some of it's impact since he'd been pretty MIA the past few episodes,

Also, Matalas has spent the last week doubling down on how they had to cut the scenes from the last episode explaining that Riker and Troi's daughter was off at the Academy or an ensign or whatever cause they dragged the episode down. Yet in this episode, knowing and seeing that everyone in Starfleet under 25 is now assimilated, they have zero concern about their own kid, don't even wonder that she might be in danger (which she would be if we take Matalas at his word), and instead they're oohing and aahing over the ship and talking about Jack being their family. Really bad and weird storytelling there all around for me and that's been a whole season issue.

I guess Elnor died also?

I agree, and an easy fix. She could have just called the captain or the computer and asked for a containment field around the room and a security team. "I'm sorry Jack, I won't leave you but I can't endanger the ship."

It wasn't really clear how far it extended. Is it anyone under 25 who has been through a transporter, or just certain ships where Changelings have infiltrated?

I guess it's just the Frontier Day fleet, so it's contained within that particular group of ships orbiting Earth.

At this point I’m more excited for an academy show (something different at least) than another matalas show. I also think I enjoyed discovery seasons 3 and 4 more than this season. Which is a shame. I’ve loved seeing the cast and the first 5 episodes but I wish I loved this more.

So, which show comes first, PIC or PROD? Because whichever one it is, you'd think SF would have learned a lesson about inter-connected ships being used against SF and/or each other.

I think the implication is Jack/Vox only took control of the under 25s on Starfleet ships. Bases and the like were not compromised, because they weren't wired into that stupid fleet integration software.

I think the Star Trek franchise has just jumped the shark with this episode. The rampant nostalgia factor was bad enough, but this is ridiculous.

I would say that every show has the responsibility to walk the line between appealing to old fans and trying to grab new ones. This season made zero effort to even put a toe on the line.
