I think this episode seemed to imply the Cube was in ruins, and the Queen herself was a wreck, able to talk, but do little else.

The whole reason that the Borg had to resort to such subterfuge is because they are a weakened little remnant. Otherwise they would have opened a transwarp conduit once they had control and the armada would have poured in.

As hard of a time as I’ve given the idea of Data coming back, I loved the scene with him and Picard. And the line in the scene with Geordi. And the look at Worf about the E and his response.

I cannot deny for one second the joys of seeing the crew of the Enterprise that I grew up with back on their ship for one last adventure. And Majel as the computer voice? Amazing. If that were it alone, my rating would be a 10.

Unfortunately, I can’t let nostalgia negate bad storytelling.

This just isn’t very good. Someone has equated it to bad fan fiction and that’s about where I have to put it. They said it themselves in the episode: Why would Starfleet, particularly led by Elizabeth Shelby (RIP, I guess…), a renowned expert on the Borg, allow for something so collective- like into their fleet? Why would they repeat something after what happened a decade or two previously as shown in Prodigy? I thought these showrunners talked to each other.

Why, when they’ve already talked about the networked vessels would they take Titan in without at least trying to stop it? Disabling it? Countermeasures obviously didn’t work. So, why didn’t we try other things before this being our “only choice?”

Why is the Enterprise-D the only non-networked ship? The other museum pieces are too? Other than the idea of it having to be the old guard who saves the day, it’s pretty convenient that it’s only the geezers who didn’t get assimilated on their old ship.

You have Troi, a trained psychologist, who just told Jack he’d never be alone, run out the door just two minutes later.

Not to mention the predictability. We’ve been talking about Locutus having something to do with Jack since the mystery box opened. Did this whole thing HAVE to be the Borg again? Do we have to continuously go back down this well? Could we maybe do something a little more interesting? Because it’s really a lot of sameness here. The Borg try, again, to assimilate Earth. And again, they’ll get their asses handed to them. Just give the fuck up already.

And yeah, lots of Borg drama. Someone who apparently knew what was going to happen when the spoilers came out about it being the Borg earlier this week said the Borg are scary. Yeah. If you hate monologuing.

I’m disappointed, but not surprised, it seems they killed off Shaw. I liked his character quite a bit. Even more so, I feel his character, while starting off extremely strongly, ended up being largely wasted since episode 6. Very disappointing.

But of course it, predictably, will lead to Seven getting command of Titan. Presuming she and Raffi survive this. And of course, they’ll bond and get back together as they fight death in the end.

Ultimately it seems this story was designed for one purpose: the end scene of this episode where they go back to Enterprise so the old folks can save the day. What’s the message here? Older is better?

Sorry, I was really hoping this episode would turn things around for me but it continues to disappoint. 5/10.

I suspect some time travel shenanigans in the last episode because by the time they reach Earth it's probably gone/assimilated. Maybe they'll find a way to return half an hour earlier lol...and perhaps get Shaw in the process.

The Enterprise-D flies into final battle against impossible odds, the crew exchange glances, not needing to say the unsayable.

Picard raises his hand, "Eng-"

Suddenly, a bright flash on the bridge fades to reveal...

"Mon Capitain! I leave you alone for five minutes..."
 
The Borg have been a fractured shell of their old selves since future Admiral Janeway's plan infected the Collective with the neurolitic pathogen in 2378 and severely damaged their transwarp network. I'm glad the Queen was shown to have limited abilities. The Collective's been a wasteland for over 20 years.

Until Picard comes and kicks their asses. I would presume that one of three things that happens in the opening minutes of episode 10: (1) a time jump and Picard has amassed a fleet with familiar faces, (2) deus ex machina and Enterprise runs into a fleet led by someone we know not affected or said fleet swoops in to help, or (3) Q, who didn’t die at the end of season two but instead became something more.

These Borg remind more of the Borg in Voyager than the way they were portrayed in TNG or FC. And I like it.
 
Excellent episode!
Alice Krige apparently has always hated the extensive costume/makeup/etc, so I wouldn't be surprised if she never appears, or if they just use the current body double and splice her face in somehow.
When Jack says, "Home" with the borg vocal subprocessor effect... chills!
Are there multiple cubes in the nebula? The Troi vision shows only one, but when Jack arrives at the nebula, it was hard to see.
 
I was really surprised when they showed the enterprise d I was like HOLY SH88 THEY DID NOT JUST BRING IT BACK!

a 6 figure pay day may have changed Alices mind about all that make up lol
 
A comment I saw on reddit that I agreed with: this episode has at least managed to make the Borg scary again. When the takeover happened it really did seem like the oldies were screwed, against impossible odds. That sense of desperation really got lost with Voyager borg onwards.
 
I feel this is the equivelant to watching porn and then feeling guilty afterwards for spending an hour doing so. I love it but at the same time I shouldn't lol.
 
10+++. Wow, Borg, Shelby and the Enterprise-D with all the THG cast on the bridge. “Engage!”, Alice K and Major Barret. Couldn’t be happier. Love the fleet views and starship names. Wish episode 10 was dropping now. It’s so exciting. Another one where I have wet eyes with joy.
