DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

Financial or 'critical' success does not equal quality.

"or" is what is skipped over. Many still use box-office as a measure of quality, rather than the actual substance of the film. Michael Bay has many financially successful films, yet most are--frankly--garbage not worth the wasted hours one will never have refunded to their lives. The Fast and the Furious franchise has earned billions, but no one is going to cite those movies as being anything close to great. Similarly, many a MCU film were hits, but were hollow and not worth even a single revisit.

With this Blue Beetle trailer, my complaint is that the film seems to be trying too hard to emulate the general template and tone of Spider-Man Homecoming, not that it is making the same specific narrative mistakes (overshadowing the titular character) as that film.
"General template" is still rather vague. What exactly do you mean by that? Because I don't see that many similarities between the BB trailer and Homecoming, but a lot of differences. For example, BB is an origin story while Homecoming is not. BB appears to not be big on secret identities, while Homecoming certainly did.

Now, when you say "tone", that is very confusing to me. Not because there aren't tonal similarities between BB and Homecoming, there certainly are the typical young hero in-over-their-head and quippy humor and all that. What confuses me is how you single out Homecoming there. Because, tonally, all the MCU Spider-Man movies are very similar. Hell, aside from the trying-to-be-Nolan ASM, all Spider-Man films are very similar in tone.

Which is probably why I'm not a fan of them. I really don't like the MCU Spider-man movies. I thought this last one had promise . . . at first. But in the end, I wasn't impressed, especially with one particular story arc.

I don't agree.

I don't love all of the DCEU movies. Okay, aside from "Birds of Prey", I didn't care for or wasn't that impressed by any of the DCEU films of the last four years. Nor do I care for the 2017 version of "Justice League".

Ah.

The next DCEU Flop.

Personally, I thought it looked like a lame Iron Spider knockoff, with a generic-looking plot, a generic villain, and a generic suit, but then I noticed that the protagonist and his family weren't of the same ethnic group as Peter Parker, so now I think it looks great, and I clapped!

(I'm also very intrigued by the idea of a villain telling the protagonist that his family is his weakness. If it turns out that his family is the source of his strength, and the protagonist ends up telling the villain that, I think we could be looking at a Best Picture nomination!)

James Gunn is saying crossover films between DC and Marvel are not out of the question although any such productions would still be a ways off.

Of course they're not--once Disney buys WBDISC

Sarcasm...I source of humour with which I am familiar.

On the recent SmartLess podcast, Ben Affleck briefly talks about the Batman role and drops a minor spoiler about The Flash--

"But I saw the trailer for the Flash and everybody was like freaking out when youcame on the screen--"

Affleck: "You know what? That movie's good. It looks really good, and its my best shit i've done as Batman"

"I hear its amazing--"

He goes on to add this:

He mentions a scene where he's saved from a conflagration by Wonder Woman using her lasso, which compels Batman to become honest about his life...

Fascinating.

Affleck referred to it as a spoiler, if that's what you're referring to.

I'm hearing more positive-to-elated responses to The Flash trailer than any DC film in recent years, with the exception of ZSJL. I hope it lives up to the promise.

There was a recent interview with Affleck where he said he thought he did a good job as Batman in the movie but for some reason I read it as him being a little sarcastic.

Disney Studios is still trying to recover from its purchase of 20th Century Fox. If it ever decides to purchase Warner Brothers, I suspect it will be years from now. Or perhaps another conglomerate will purchase Disney.

I thought Affleck did a great job. He and Christian Bale are my two favorite Batmans.

I think it could depend on if Zaslav fails in his attempt to pimp Superman for maximum dollars.

If he fails and creates more debt, it could be an opening for consolidation.

BuT yeah... it will be a few years before that can happen.

I can't imagine Disney would actually be allowed to buy WB/Discovery, I can't remember what it's called, but I'm pretty sure it's too close to one company having to power over their industry. There was already some question about whether the government would allow them to buy Fox, so after that, I can't imagine they'd be allowed to buy another one of the big entertainment companies.
