Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

Was the same set used for the shuttle that brought Picard and Riker to Titan in the Earth Spacedock in the first episode and the shuttle that brought Ro Laren to Titan? I see that the chairs are different, but the rest seems the same to me.

Did he design a ship without copyrighting it? Because that’s what we’re talking about here.
It IS the same thing. Someone belioeves a major studio used something they designed, and they feel slighted/owed reimbursement. It's something NO major studio wants to take a chance on - so NO, Paramount isn't just going to go to the Deviant Art website and take a fan design they like. They're going to continue to go to and use resources they KNOW they own lock stock and barrel.

CBS made a show that had some similarities to some guy’s video game that CBS obviously knew nothing about. That’s not remotely the same thing as what we’re talking about. We’re talking about CBS/Paramount willfully taking a fan design off the internet without reimbursing/giving credit to the person who designed it.

Are we eluding to a specific example or just discussing it generally?

The Titan and Intrepid designs (Constitution III and Duderstadt class respectively) are both fan designs used in partnership with Bill Krause, who goes by the name Admiral Buck on instagram.

Not sure if that was mentioned yet

Bill's original Shangri-La Mk2 class can also be seen in the Titan-A's conference room representing a 2290s Titan. He also designed a mid-23rd Century Stargazer for the Stargazer's conference room.

As far as Star Trek Picard is concerned the Shangri-La Class was credited to Bill Krause by Terry Matalas and I'm pretty sure the Titan A was the Shangri-La modified by him and Doug Drexler. So technically the fan design is not present in the series except for the golden model in the Titan A's ready room. Terry has been very good at crediting the work of everyone involved. Wheh it comes to the Original Titan and Sean Tourangeau I am not certain. I wonder if anyone in the Lower Decks production team credited him for the Luna Class' inclusion.

Well, this is the ‘Starship design in Star Trek Picard’ thread, so we’re talking about ships. At least I am. :)

Bill Krause was hired to help design the Titan-A and the Intrepid. His already-existing Shangri-La design was incorporated into the gold Titan history wall models. Matalas didn’t steal Krause’s designs without his permission or knowledge.

So the Navy will start building ships that look like they were designed in the 1900's any time now!

If the United States Navy had nigh-infinite resources and over 250 years' worth of compatible design aesthetics to draw upon, why not?

Spaceships can be any shape as long as there's enough room inside for the necessary equipment for them to function.

Exactly. So there's nothing stopping Starfleet from having some retro designs out of aesthetic preference.

Well I always remember those words of Will Riker:

Right now I'm on the bridge of the toughest, fastest, most powerful ship Starfleet ever put into service. And I got a fleet of them at my back.

He's talking about Inquiry class. So it seems that's a warship some kind.

Possibly, but it could also just be the most advanced ship in the fleet as of 2399... Presumably it's since been beat by the Sagan class, since it's a new class as of early 2401 and incorporates Borg technology.

Not a difficult one but a terrible one in my opinion. Titan-A is a horrible ship with a stupid name and back story.

I think the Constitution III-class is kind of ugly and I would have much preferred that S3 be set aboard either the new Sagan-class Stargazer or the Luna-class Titan. But I have to admit that ugly ships have a habit of growing on me. I wasn't originally a fan of the Crossfield class, but now I see a lot to love in the USS Discovery. The Titan-A is starting to grow on me.

Actually, they said the ship was built in the 2280’s. Retroactively, it would have been awesome for the Enterprise-A.

According to the "Picard Logs" the USS Titan under Saavik was launched in 2290, but yeah..close enough.
