Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

There's a really big difference between todays Navy trying to recreate sailing ships from the past and Star Fleet redesigning their modern fleet with Starship Designs from their past.

That's like comparing an apple to an apple computer.
It doesn't make any sense.

Waterborne vessels will always retain some semblance of of a basic shape just because of the needed dynamics of moving though water. There's no getting around that.
But obviously wood is no longer the best material to use.

Spaceships can be any shape as long as there's enough room inside for the necessary equipment for them to function.
Star Fleet engineers still use pretty much the same materials for hulls, they've just made the accompanying electronic support systems stronger to accommodate the different hull shapes.

This thread warps past making sense.

Star Trek is an entertainment franchise. It's a very real thing. It employs hundreds of people and generates income for its owners. One that is currently trading on nostalgia, much like the fictional Starfleet.
Yup. Whatever justification can come up with for in universe the simple fact is Star Trek is trading on nostalgia and Starfleet is reflecting that attitude.

This is not a difficult idea.

So the Navy will start building ships that look like they were designed in the 1900's any time now!
Perhaps even the Navy
