That is a good point. Could he create a Star Trek series with entirely original characters and make it interesting and compelling?

Love Tilly. Where do I sign that petition?
Hell, I'm not immune to the nostalgia. I love Strange New Worlds for being so old fashioned. Though in my defense, having a show about actually exploring is so rare these days it almost feels like a "new" concept.
And sadly, Andor failed in viewership ratings.
Though personally I found it's writing more engaging than any of the Nu Trek shows by a mile.
If Trek got a showrunner on par with Tony Gilroy, I'd be on could nine.

I'm not either. Captain Pike is my favorite character and has been for 30 years since I watched the Cage on VHS. But, that doesn't mean that I just watch SNW for Pike. I enjoy La'an, Ortegas and Hemmer as much as Pike, Una and Spock.
There is a lot of exploring there that has added a lot of flavor to my favorite period of Trek. I don't mind the occasional nostalgia. I mind when it drives the reason why people are eager to give someone, anyone, carte blanche keys to the franchise.
Tilly is at least an original and interesting character.
So was Neelix in his time. Doesn't make it a particularly appealing character.

Agreed. And preferring something who doesn't fit in to the stereotype hero category would be nice in a lead role.
Tilly is the one character from Discovery that I can't say I care for. Dunno if I can exactly nail it down why she annoys me so much, there's just "something" about her that seems very unprofessional. Seems like someone who would have never passed any of the psychological exams needed to get into the academy. But, that's me and my own opinion. The actress seems like a perfectly kind a decent person and I can't hate on anyone for liking a fictional character.

If you say so. Wikipedia’s section on viewership seems to be pretty positive. Rated well with critics as well. Plus it got a second season. But more importantly, I liked it.
It had a second season before the series even aired. It was a multi-season deal.
