I don't see Geordi casting a big enough or intimidating enough 'shadow' that his daughter would feel a lot of pressure from it. Not as big as the Federation and Starfleet is by the early 25th Century, anyway. Her father's fame (such as it is) is rooted a full generation in the past.

This thread is killing me as a person with ptsd. None of his decisions have been questioned, just his behaviour and the fact that, off duty and on pain meds, he got emotional at Picard. He still helped save the ship and worked with Picard and didn't let his personal feelings get in the way of that.

I'm sure Starfleet knew of Capt. James Kirk's trauma related to Tarsus IV, and Kodos. And I'm sure they knew of his trauma related to the loss of the USS Farragut. I'm just glad they didn't withdraw his name from command consideration or Gene Roddenberry wouldn't have had a show. :)

Well said. There's got to be more than enough trauma in starfleet to go around. Imagine what Miles O'Brien's file says...

It does make me wonder if Starfleet kept former Wolf 359 survivors like Shaw away from the Battle of Sector 001 in First Contact, like they did with Picard. Maybe that's why Sisko wasn't commanding the Defiant.

Uh, I don't know how many would want a Captain Shaw series. But I'm certainly not craving for one.

Another to consider is lots of people died in the Dominion War. So the bar might be lower as to who becomes Captain. Most Captain need experience and lots of younger officers who would becoming old and experienced enough to rise to that rank simply aren't their anymore.

Also Starfleet seems to have a alien problem in that most of it's fleet seems to still be a great deal mostly human. Many of these other planets simply don't seem to be creating enough interest in it's young to make them want to join Starfleet in great numbers.

Nah. Star Trek has a budget problem. Aliens cost time and money.

Thinking about it a bit more, I suppose what I find...odd (for want of a better word) about this is that Shaw's PTSD seems to be giving his behaviour some sort of free pass, whereas Picard's (and to a lesser extent, Riker's) doesn't seem to count for anything. "Family" made it quite clear how traumatised Picard was by being turned into Locutus, with some part of his mind looking on as the events of Wolf 359 unfolded and not being able to do a damned thing about it...and he's still being blamed for it all 30-plus years later. Surely he ought to be cut the same sort of slack as Shaw. And I still don't get why Shaw (apparently) requested Seven as his first officer. Some of the dots just don't join up. For me, at least.

Huh. I'd forgotten that. Shows how much of an impression Vadic - and Shaw - made on me. (Or how crap my memory is for such things.)
Yes. It's one thing for it to be on file, but how effectively was it treated?

I really hope my comments haven't come across as somehow trivialising PTSD or anyone who has it. If so, I apologise. That was not my intent at all.

I don't think the behavior deserves a free pass. I think it makes them all very understandable.

in TOS they had whole vulcan crews
It's more the idea that he is somehow unfit for duty that bothers me.

However, in terms of why he is able to be angry at Locutus/Picard is simple: it's from his point of view. There's not one point of view - Picard can be traumatized by having been locutus and everyone who encountered locutus can be triggered by Picard. It doesn't have to add up into one 'good' narrative. Sisko would still be triggered by Picard if he'd never had a therapy session/time lesson with the prophets. Plus ptsd therapy is pretty nonlinear - sometimes you do fine with a trigger for years and then suddenly in a period of stress it affects you again. When it counted, Shaw acted like all of the best Starfleet officers we know.

Eh, Worf quite frequently took the Defiant out with Sisko staying behind on the station throughout DS9's run. That wasn't really all that unusual. What was, was the complete lack of anyone else from DS9.

Count me in as someone who wants a Shaw series, preferably aboard the Enterprise-F or Enterprise-G. I'd love to see the entire bridge crew in the show too.

However, if it's the Captain Seven show, I still want the whole bridge crew, plus maybe Raffi and Worf, but with Shaw promoted to Admiral, overseeing all of the Titan's activities, micromanaging and putting his mark of disapproval on every situation

I consider Shaw a coward for wanting to hand over a Federation citizen to bounty hunters and unintelligent for not interrogating Jack Crusher to his face for some context or ordering a simple DNA test. Are you happy now?

    Count me in Team Shaw.

I mean a man he, rightly or wrongly, associates with the worst trauma of his life shows up with the former captain of the original Titan, they both swan in like they own the place and demand to be taken outside of Federation space. When he says no they, from his perspective, persuade his first officer to betray him and send the ship there anyway, at which point they steal a shuttle, next thing you know his ship and crew are in mortal danger. I mean if he wasn't in a bad mood before...

Yet each time he's needed to he's stepped up to the plate and taken the right decision in the end, switching from arsehole to professional instantly.

Sure if you made a Titan show you'd probably need to polish a few of his rough edges (but hell by the end of Picard S3 many of those edges might have already been polished for all we know) so I think the writing would be key to keeping his abrasiveness but also keeping him empathetic week in week out, but he'd be a different kind of Captain which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

He's probably going to die heroically saving the Federation now, isn't he?

Grow up. He didn't actually hand Jack over, so I'm not sure how to respond to that. What would a DNA test prove? And when was he supposed to order it? He was incapacitated by the attack. By your own logic, Riker is unintelligent for not interrogating Jack or ordering a DNA test as well once he took over.

He does seem like he is heavily influenced by the Vulcan proverb “needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few” in prioritizing his crew over Picard. Riker, and Jack.

But, Shaw could have locked a tractor beam on the shuttle, and brought them back on board and returned to Federation space immediately. Just like Shaw could have asked his tactical officer to create a concussive torpedo blast at the Shrike in the same manner Riker and Picard did in the following episode when Vadic deadline to hand over Jack was up and warp back to Federation space immediately. He did neither. Even if he is not big on engaging battles or coming up with effective battle tactics, that’s what he has a tactical officer for.

I'm just uncertain about his abilities as captain, and feel his demeanor is more useful in dropping truth bombs on the shortcomings of the Federation and Starfleet.

They could have had O’Brien at least, considering his past ties to TNG.
