I think the things mentioned make it a better show. I personally don't care whether it *feels* like Star Trek or legacy shows or not. I just want a well written show with good characters. I don't care if it's a show on Earth about Picard dealing with grief, or if Picard is in a bad place in his life for several episodes. I just want something that's well written to me and has a cohesive narrative.
Both, I guess? I don't much care for the "is it/is it not Star Trek" blather. I just care if it's good. To the extent that it feels like Trek, it's because Trek used to exemplify that kind of meat-and-potatoes storytelling approach.
Did it. Always felt very workman like in stories but the characters made it memorable.
That's what I mean by meat-and-potatoes. Basic, componently executed stuff. Beginning, middle, end, focus one one or two characters and their arcs per episode, and a conservative approach to stuff like blocking, camera work, editing, etc. Basically the Michael Piller style.
I suppose if there's one item on my list that is a matter of feeling like "Star Trek," it's stoicism. Traditional Trek characters react to duress with a certain reserve, and when shows like Discovery instead have tears and weeping and overt blubbery emotion, that's the one area where I find myself thinking it's off-brand. It just doesn't feel right to me.
Everything else I listed is, IMO, just a matter of solid storytelling.
And this was exemplary?
Did I indicate I thought it was? I think it's solid and dependable, a good enjoyable time.

That’s a lot better than how some have described the issues with emotions in Disco. Still, it takes different types in the world. And showing emotion would make its way into the 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th and 32nd centuries. And after what? Almost 650 episodes in that era, in my opinion, it’s a breath of fresh air to see something different. We’re not all perfectly stoic even in the best of scenarios.
There are dozens of 'em on TV right now, at least.
I agree with your points generally (although the profanity is a non-issue for me).
I'd say the single largest factor is that this season so far has been very effective with its serialized storytelling. Previous seasons of Picard (particularly the 2nd season) and the past several seasons of Discovery had good writing, but they really fell flat when trying to tell a season long story.
With the current season of Picard, there appears to be a cohesive, season long story. Each episode builds on the previous ones effectively. Of course, we'll have to see if they stick the landing. But I'm loving this season so far!

I've never said the current season is "more Star Trek." I've only said that I like it better than last season's Picard and the past several seasons of Discovery. I don't need a series to be "more Star Trek" if I'm enjoying it more.
I actually praised Discovery last season for having a great sense of how to be a Star Trek series. But I think its writing let it down in other ways.
In short, I'll take a series I like more for whatever reason over a series that is "more Star Trek" but I like less.
Of course, this is all subjective. YMMV.
Indeed. And more than that I don't subscribe to the current pop style stoicism, but the classic one were a person is allowed to acknowledge the emotion, accept it as reality and still be able to move forward in their decision making. Stoicism doesn't mean denying emotion, at least from Marcus Aurelius and others in the classic sense.
I get that TNG presented that facade of action over inaction, but even TOS had Kirk reflecting with McCoy over his emotions. There's a balance between the two.
Perhaps, to @Gepard, and @Mr Awe and other's points that there is a great balance in this season over others.
Perhaps so. A huge aspect of Star Trek, particularly the films is “the human adventure.” Well, that adventure includes all aspects from stoicism to deep emotion. I can see that this does have a bit more balance than say, Disco. But I’d argue that there is still more emotion here as opposed to the Berman era.
