I'm pretty sure use of the word "pot" in that scene was just a play on words joke that didn't stick the landing for some people. I chuckled but maybe only because I'm from the era when "pot" "weed" and "Mary Jane" were in use. I'm often surprised by the things fans will pick out of an episode to clutch their pearls over.

I'm surprised people are stuck arguing on whether the slang of "pot" would survive to the 24th-25th centuries, but haven't batted an eye at "grease monkey."

I would guess that internal combustion engines that use petroleum based fuels wouldn't be a common thing to know (at least that's the feeling you get from what I remember of Tom Paris's love of cars) and that "grease monkey" might have gone through limited usage in 300 years time.

I can totally see Trip Tucker using the term during his 10 years on Enterprise NX-01. A Florida boy born and raised in the early 22nd century? Oh, he wasn't that far removed from us in the present day real world.

The subtitles are correct. Probably just Patrick a flubbing a line and no one catching because they sound similar.

I was thinking the same thing. We still use "horsepower" after all.

And I could be wrong but in at least one episode of the franchise the light intensity level was measured in candlepower. "Operation -- Annihilate!(TOS)" perhaps.

I thought it was good but was puzzled by a couple things. I would be curious to hear what those who absolutely loved the episode think.

The energy waves were pretty self evident. Isn't it strange Noone thought about them until Jack Crusher ? Isn't this ship suposed have alot of specialists on board? Are they mainly young officers? Why was Riker just waiting around to die. I don't know , it feels that on TNG their would of been more collective brainstorming before throwing in the towel.

Good questions: so far the Titan has seemed underpowered and manned by inexperienced kids.

As I said upthread, my issue with the line is it's not even contemporary slang, it's antiquated now. People still called it "pot" back when I was in HS in the 1990s, but it's pretty much exclusively called weed by millennials and zoomers. It kinda comes across as a "how do you do fellow kids" moment as a result.

I imagine in a true utopia we would both see people feel less need for drinking and have an openness to more visionary substances. Unfortunately Trek nowadays just apes current culture.

It always has. TOS was literally commenting on and reflecting the 1960s. People have been using alcohol ever since we accidentally drank some bad juice and liked it. That won’t change in three to four hundred years. And it won’t be changed by living in a “utopia”.

Theyre aren't even hiding the fact they are just writing lines using today's slang now. It's not just the "pot" reference. "Dipshite from Chicago " is anither one. The jokes in Star Trek 4 and Zeframe Cochrane exchange in First Contact - where he said he's taking a "leak' and Geardi didn't get it cannot be written anymore. Because everyone talks modern now. I don't mind it. I just wished they used less of it . It sometimes pull me out of the story.

I'm torn tbh. I hate the ship but I love Shaw. I love 7 but I'm sick of series clinging to old shows*

More 25th century is what I really want though. Way more that Disco or SNW so I wouldn't hate Star Trek : Shaw.

If Kirk can talk about dipping “pigtails in inkwells” and crewmen can “bet credits to Navy beans” , I think we can survive “pot” and a “dipshit from Chicago”.
The joke was lame in FC and should be avoided.
