Which is why Mount’s interest (or not) in continuing to do the show has no bearing on how long it will last.
You are right.

No doubt CBS is weighing and measuring as we speak. The balances hang precariously as the sands drop on to them.

Well, unless they signed them to a multi-season contract at the start; IF they need to work out a renewal salary and Anson Mount declines; one would think the show will be ended by Paramount+ at that point.

So, yeah, as the Lead of the series IF Anson Mount decides he doesn't want to continue THAT would end the series at that point.

We’ll see when they decide to end SNW.
My point is that it ended because Stewart didn't want to do more (at the time), it had nothing to do with cutting costs or anything.

Unless Mount is key to the show continuing, it's not a precedent.

I think 3

The news coming out of Paramount in the last week about streaming and streaming revenue makes me think that they finally understand that having Trek on every week in the year was not sustainable. With so many different options and the cost of streaming rising, Discovery was the first Trek series to feel that hit and I don't think it will be the last. Of course what might help is Picard is ending this year as well, but I think the streaming model is in for a rude awakening this year and Star Trek is not immune to that. I would like to see SNW go at least 5 though. I also wish there was more buzz around this show. The season ended and it feels like the season ended 5 years ago instead of last year. We got news on the crossover with LD, but that was it. There needs to be more hype, especially if the series is coming back this year. They should not wait until Comic Con to preview a new trailer. It should come out soon, maybe even a week or 2 before Picard ends.

That's because they promote whatever is currently running over EVERYTHING else; until the next show on the release slate's time draws near. When Prodigy was front and center ALL Star Trek ads were Prodigy. Then about 1 month prior to PICARD S3 a few PICARD promos popped up in the mix.

They've been doing that since they first had 3 shows in rotation.

They may switch is up and include some Discovery retrospective stuff over the next year as they definitely will want to milk it as much as they can with less premiering in 2023 as a result of pushing Discovery S5 to 2024.

Even IF they announce a second Live Action Trek series this year; with the way their production has gone in the past, said show won't be ready to premiere until sometime in 2025.

Pre-Discovery being canceled I would have said 5 but now I think we get just one more beyond what has already been filmed.

In fact, it would not surprise me if they already know and are adjusting S3 scripts to give it a proper wrap to avoid new filming.

Well, they always write seasons as if they're the last.

I’d hope they give SNW at least as much time as they gave Discovery but I appreciate that finances might dictate that decision more than anything.

5 because I want more seasons, but I would not be surprised if they cut back on Trek entirely. Hopefully Kurtzman will give an interview soon that helps us glean what the real meaning of the Disco cancellation is. It really could be that it was the least popular Trek and that it makes sense to try something new in it's place.

I doubt they'd admit it was the least popular. That would be bad PR.

If that's the truth it probably will be a few years before that comes out.

Since they plan to promote Star Trek Discovery season 5 another year before they release it, I doubt you'll get any real substantive statement from Alex Kurtzman regarding the cancellation decision by the Paramount+ upper management suits.

This is the only type of PR we're going to get from Paramount+ for the foreseeable future:

I liked season 1 a lot but I wonder how much mileage is left in Pike's arc. Ep 10 seemed to bring an end to the possibility that Pike might be able to change his future and so he doesn't really have a constructive choice now but to accept what is going to happen to him. I am not sure how the character develops in a way that will be interesting to watch and how that can be sustained over multiple seasons. Obviously this is why you employ professional writers though.

Just because of the character of Christopher Pike has accepted his fate; it doesn't mean that there can be no good or interesting character development for the character. It's like a terminal cancer victim accepting the fact that he's got a very short time left. But what he does with his remaining time can be interesting; and he can still grow and develop emotionally.

If anything I like the fact that they're not going to have the character of Christopher Pike bemoaning and trying to change his fate every few episodes. It was a decent character arc for the first season, and I think it was concluded quite well. Now we'll see what type of character arc they give him for season two.

Can I ask why?

Doctor Who plays with this a lot, actually. Still ends up very interesting. And even if Pike knows the audience doesn't know that path that gets him there, so there is potential for drama, including how he treats his crew who are not as safe as he is. Is he more willing to take the risk himself, setting the precedent for Kirk to lead landing parties all the time, though it really is not the role of the captain? Does Pike become less and less willing to put Spock or Singh or others in harm's way? Due certain people cause him to freeze because he knows they will die?

Lots of drama there.
