Who knows? Perhaps him taking all the time to research the cadets and contacting them took time away from his attempts to get Una released.
Now that he's made peace with his fate in a fashion; he can now devote that time to Una's situation, and do what it takes to get her released, or the sentence mitigated in some way.
No it didn't. Just because Picard is ending after three doesn't mean that will be the norm.
Starfleet Academy was just announced. Reading the tea leaves it seems the cancellations had more to do with those shows being more expensive than they were worth. It's too bad because Picard has been really good this year, but clearly they can't afford numerous exploration shows. Maybe if it had been this good from the start, it would have lasted longer.

Apples and oranges. Most streaming shows aren't Star Trek. Star Trek has never followed the usual norms when it comes to television.
Yes, most streaming shows don’t cost anywhere near as much to produce as Trek shows do.
Star Trek has always cost more to produce than other shows yet TNG, DS9 and VOY lasted seven years. None of us knows what will happen, we'll just have to wait and see. But if SNW keeps having the success it's having, it will be far longer than three. Successful shows that make money don't get canceled.

That is by no means an absolute. There are many factors that contribute to whether a show continues or not. Money and success aren’t always the prime motivating factor for that show continuing.
Maybe not always, but most of the time it is. If the show is generating clicks on the service, it's not going anywhere as that is the entire point of the show existing.
Reduced budget huh? Is that why Paramount+ just green lighted another live action Star Trek series Starfleet Academy?
They're not going to reduce the budget on anything. As soon as a series, be it from the Star Trek franchise or some other franchise of theirs, fails to meet certain viewing metrics, they'll just cancel it.
And with the end of the covid-19 filming protocols in May 2023 across the Hollywood film industry (with the blessing of the various Hollywood unions); certain production costs will go away, so production costs will come down to a small degree across the board.
They will be using existing production assets from DSC.
And why not? Those sets have only been in use for three seasons. They used a lot of the old Discovery 23rd Century era set assets for Star Trek Strange New Worlds as well.
That's just the way Hollywood production works.
My point is that SFA won’t be as expensive to produce because they will already be using existing production assets. That’s why they’re even making the show at all.
Again Hollywood has always looking for a way to reduce costs. But that doesn't mean they are starting to openly slash the production budget for a series. Kurtzman streaming Trek has a certain look and a cinematic feel that they're not going to drop because it's now part of what's expected by audiences when they watch a Star Trek streaming production.
