Spoilers Starship Design in Star Trek: Picard

But how does it compare to the "La Sirena"?

As far as I can tell La Sirena is very slightly shorter than the Raven but has half the number of decks – so the Eleos is substantially larger than La Sirena, getting on for three or four times the volume maybe?

Still gets me.. Eleo's has to Charge the Warp core for what seems like minutes to go to warp?? Huh??

As Lord Helmet said: JUST GO!

It may be a privately owned ship. They can't all be La Sirena's. Elios might have been a junker, or just repaired as much as possible to keep going.

If the warp core were powering up from a completely cold start then it might reasonably take several minutes. A full shutdown of the core might have been a stealth technique. TOS: "The Naked Time" and TOS: "The Savage Curtain" suggests that for a 2260s Constitution-class ship a complete restart of the warp drive could take 30 minutes. The TNG Technical Manual doesn't give specific numbers for a cold start of the warp drive of a Galaxy-class ship but it does use the phrase "the engine pressure is slowly brought up to 72,000 kilopascals, roughly 715 times atmospheric pressure", which suggests that it's still not a quick process even in the 24th century.

But how does it compare to the "La Sirena" & "Cleveland Booker's ship"?

Between the Eleos, the Protostar, La Sirena, and the Nautilus, modern Star Trek is developing quite a taste for scout ships and starships smaller than the Defiant, isn't it?

I believe the implication is that the engine is in bad repair on account of the ship is being run by a doctor and her son while on the run from pirates.

^Well, I like it as pandering to my tastes, specifically, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate for the TNG crew or era. Some of those aspects, like the TWOK title font and opening caption, were idiosyncratic even for the TOS movies. It feels as weird reviving them as the use of the TOS font is for "Star Trek" in the title of every show and movie in contemporary branding.

Yeah, I see your point there. But I'm not sure if most audience members are particularly invested in the idea that the differences in settings should translate into a noticeable visual difference in technology levels. Are lots of people really pulling up an episode of Star Trek: Picard and thinking to themselves, "I can't get invested in this story because the USS Titan-A doesn't look much more advanced than the USS Enterprise on Strange New Worlds"?

No, but that wasn't really my point. I never said that the look of the ship was going to be a deciding factor on whether or not someone is going to enjoy the show. I said that the look of the shows themselves are not that much different as far as depicting either the 2250's or the 2400's. If the viewer doesn't give a crap about that, fine.

If we ignore what Riker says about it being a "refit" of the Luna....

Absolutely no problem at all

If we buy what Shaw says about purging Riker's collection of Jazz mp3's, I could buy they used the other Titan's computer core, at most. But Riker is a funny guy, he probably went to the Titan-A launch and uploaded the music in there just to get under the "next guy's" skin.

Based on what we've seen so far, it could be reasonable to assume that at this point in Federation history there is a desire by the fleet engineers to harken back to the early years of Star Fleet's exploration.
Especially with the 250th Anniversary of the NX-01 launch coming up, and they have been purposely pulling old style designs out of the archives and upgrading them with newer technology.

Everything old is new again.

(which is basically what STO has been doing for years now)

Actually, he doesn't say that the Titan-A is a refit of the Luna. So instead of ignoring the dialogue one could also interpret it that Riker was in command of the Titan-A as well and the ship had a refit after Shaw's 36 missions.

That's what I'm going with. I assume Riker's first Titan was totaled in a glorious battle of some sort.

Terry said the Titan was retired after a very busy life. Which is also brought up in one of the Instagram audio logs.

That's fine by me, that's always been a area that hasn't really been covered very well and that would probably be the most common StarShip size for civilians since most civilians wouldn't need a StarShip as large as the Defiant.

A Defiant sized StarShip would be extravagently voluminous for a small crew of 1-9 people.

That's WAY too much interior space for that few people.

Seems like a silly idea to me. The Titan was only just launched in 2379 -- it's only 22 years old. It's not even old enough to rent a car by itself yet! Starships are supposed to have service lives in the area of 80-100 years -- you don't retire one after less than 25 years.

The audio log says she was involved in a lot of tactical focused missions.
