This episode represents just about everything I despise about modern genre shows and franchise films: it's overload with nostalgia for no good reason at all. Just about everything is a memberberry.

I'm a Star Trek fan. We're all Star Trek fans. I don't need the constant reminder of things from the past. We've all seen these episodes and films countless times. We know we're in this universe. We know this is a continuation The Next Generation.

I have to watch it a few more times before I form an opinion the episode, itself, but the nostalgia factor I just find very intrusive.

What do you consider a "memberberry" that was in there for no good reason? and how was everything in the episode a member berry for no good reason?

Yeah, I thought mystery guy had something to do with the conspiracy because didn't he drop an Ent-C model into his drink when Riker and Picard leave? It was dark so I couldn't really tell if it was -C or -D but if it was the -C then it and the Rachel Garrett statue make me think this conspiracy has something to do with Yesterday's Enterprise.

I'll have to rewatch it, but I thought it was the D. I took it as nothing more than a button on the joke about the "fat ones."

If this is supposed to be a situation where a Captain doesn't respect an Admiral because he knows they're always evil, then it didn't come off like that to me anyway.

Unless he's read their mind, he has no reason to believe that though. Picard literally saved the galaxy twice in continuity of this show alone, you'd think that'd give him some measure of respect before you decide to be Borg-racist against him. lol

I actually liked Shaw wasn't fawning over Picard and Riker like most Starfleet personnel do. In fact, if you think about it, he has every right to be suspicious of two retired officers making an unscheduled stop then trying to change course. Sure, Picard was a decorated officer and statesman in the Enterprise-D days, but look at the things that happened when Picard and Riker teamed up since then (and some of Picard's solo outings)

1. Lost the Enterprise-D to a 20-year old Klingon Bird of Prey
2. Disobeyed orders and trashed the Enterprise-E, lost probably 3/4 of the crew to the Borg (though Picard did save Earth, so that'd probably score him some brownie points)
3. Disobeyed orders, trashed the Enterprise-E, led an armed rebellion against a Federation admiral
4. Trashed the Enterprise-E
5. Botched up the evacuation of Romulus and Remus, the Jellyfish is lost (most likely trashed)
6. Lost La Sirena

Shaw probably didn't want to oversee ANOTHER lengthy refit of the Titan-A because of whatever shenanigans Picard and Riker had in mind that'd more than likely fuck up his ship

That's right. For some reason, I thought it got Borgified when Jurati flew off with it in the 21st century. I thought it was weird Raffi had a ship that looked EXACTLY like Rios'
It did, but that was La Sirena from an alternate timeline. :)

It was a Playmates small plastic toy of the D that came with some figures.

It was actually a micromachines Ent-D. You can tell due to the amount of hull detailing.

Heh ... It just dawned on me after watching the episode for a second time that the end credits are going to be the opening credits for the rest of the season.

I think I was so high on cloud-9 the first time it just didn't register in my brain.

I’d say this was good, but not great. Maybe my expectations were too high. I thought the premiers for S1 and S2 were much better quite honestly.

Things I Liked:
1. The opening action sequence with Crusher was great.
2. Everything with Picard and Riker
3. Everything with Picard and Laris
4. The Titan-A
5. The music! Absolutely fantastic. Best soundtrack to any Star Trek production in decades.
6. The TOS feature film era vibe.
7. The super-destructo-weapon that blew up the Federation installation was cool.
8. Some cool callbacks and homages.
9. Starship porn

Things I Didn’t Like:
1. It used to irritate me when people complained about things in modern Trek being too darkly lit. Well, this show finally broke me. This is WAY too darkly lit. Buy some lightbulbs, folks. And that’s all I have to say about that.
2. I’ve tried for 2 full seasons and 1 episode, and I just can’t force myself to like Anika Hanson. I liked 7 of 9 on VOY, but I don’t like this new interpretation of the character.
3. The story seemed kind of klunky. Was this really Riker’s big plan? Get aboard a ship and sort of hope they can convince the Captain to change course….because…..? And how the hell did 7 just commandeer the Titan on her own authority?
4. Ominous villain ship is ominous.

Things I’m Not Sure About:
1. Shaw seems like a dick. We’ll see
2. Please don’t make Beverly’s son be Picard’s. Please. I beg you.

I liked it. I definitely didn’t love it. Honestly, my favorite things about it were the soundtrack, the TOS feature film tone, Frakes as Riker, and the end credits. Legit, I think the end credits earned the episode a full point. I’m not sure that’s a good thing….

7/10

Translation: "I'm not creative enough to write a story that stands on its own merit. Look and listen to these things that remind you of your childhood."
No need to be a jerk.

It was the -D, a repainted Micromachine model from the looks of it.

Season 3 is specifically mimicking the movies, which have always been dark for some reason, even the TOS ones.

Having had 24 hours to digest it, the more I look at it the more the show has been multiple TOS movies, previous seasons of Picard, etc. shoved into a blender with ice and served to us when it's 110 degrees outside so we have no choice but to like it.

Even the soundtrack, it's like someone put all previous Star Trek TOS movie and TNG movie music into an AI model and this is the result.

Hopefully the rest of the season is more original.

That would be cool. The music is so much better than the tinny sounding junk from. Seasons 1 and 2. Its movie quality scores and its definitely more pleasing to the ear .

so we have no choice but to like it.
There's always a choice.

There's original themes in here too like the Titan's theme, which can be heard as it's leaving spacedock, it's not just past music. But this season has been described as a series of films (mostly inspired by TOS) put to together, so expect more of it.

Well, I was a bit underwhelmed. Some stuff I liked, and some not so much. I am hopeful for the remainder of the season.

As someone else has said, when did starfleet ships go to dark bridges with neon highlights. Can we have some lights, please? Also, as time and technology progresses, shouldn't stations and displays look less busy and cluttered rather than more? TNG pulled that off with the bridge of the D vis-a-vis Kirk's Enterprise.

Loved the scenes with Laris. Orla Brady in those Romulan ears just does it for me. Should Irish brogues become the new default Romulan accent? I really felt bad knowing we aren't going to see her again for most if not all of this season.

The musical callbacks are great and a bit jarring at the same time. I was mentally snapping back and forth between Picard, TMP, TWOK, and First Contact. Same with the scenes of Titan leaving spacedock.

Did anyone else think the bartender in the first scene with Riker looked like Hoshi Sato?

Don't like the JJ-Trek warp effects. Enough said there. Plus, the baddie ship is just OTT, and also brought undertones of JJ-Trek.

I don't understand making the ship the Titan when clearly it isn't the Titan fans have been seeing on novel covers and other TV shows for years. Why not just name it something else? That whole element just felt poorly contrived.

The less said about Raffi, the better. Of all the characters they had to bring back from the first two seasons- really?

The command climate aboard the Titan is pure poison. Realistically, 7 / Hansen would have been transferred off long ago. The captain hates her, and vice-versa. It's unworkable in real life, and in fiction as well. The public displays on the bridge are unacceptable, and a great way for a captain to spoil / ruin a batch of promising young officers. I can tell you with certainty from my years in the Navy that a commanding officer who is out of bounds will soon have a wardroom that is just as out of bounds. Juniors follow the example set by their seniors. The disrespect shown by this captain towards 7 and Picard highlights an emotional immaturity that renders him unfit for command. (Echoes of Disco). In short, he makes Captain Jellicoe look like Picard by comparison.

The age of the cast continues to pull me out of it all a little bit. I just have a hard time watching a bunch of actors (beloved ones, to be sure) trying to pull off the action and pew pew well into their 70's and 80's. There is nothing to be done about that, however. We're all older than we were in '87-'94 and doing the best we can. ;)

All right. Bring on Episode 2.
