He's closer to what you'd find on real navy ship since Captain Styles.
If this is supposed to be a situation where a Captain doesn't respect an Admiral because he knows they're always evil, then it didn't come off like that to me anyway.

Sure, but on the other hand the guy shows up unannounced on your ship, is clearly lying to you and trying to manipulate you into violating your orders, and he won't even tell you what he's up to. What the hell?
Unless he's read their mind, he has no reason to believe that though. Picard literally saved the galaxy twice in continuity of this show alone, you'd think that'd give him some measure of respect before you decide to be Borg-racist against him. lol

And whoof...whatever the hell the weapon was that transported that Starfleet building over an occupied city, that was hella horrifying. Definitely interested in that bit of the plot. Overall, I didn't think this was as strong as the first episodes of the prior PIC seasons, but I'm also expecting things are going to stay a lot more even as we move forward than in previous seasons.

I thought that was the experimental quantum tunneling machine that could possibly be used as a weapon, that was for the first time being used as a weapon. The red lady (statue out front of the building) was the first victim, not the one selling the device. Raffi figured it out, but couldn't warn them. Maybe when the machine is activated it blocks communications (just a wild guess on my part). I'm just on page 4 of the thread, still 24 pages to go at this point. Sorry if others have said the same thing earlier, or given a better explanation.

Shaw wasn’t even on hand to see the ship leave space dock (which should be a kinda big deal).
And I don’t think his attitude towards his guests was him overcompensating in the presence of a living legend.
The guy is just a heel.It happens.

At this point I'm expecting no consequences, particularly if people are right and they kill off Shaw so they can just get to Captain Seven.

I haven't read through the thread, but has anyone tried explaining why a phaser pump action shotgun exists? lol

If you follow the rules, nothing bad happens.

Two conmen show up with a ridiculous story, but so long as his crew is smart and follows the rules, he can take a nap.

Why does Beverly have a Pump-Action "First Contact" Phaser Rifle?

Those weren't supposed to be Pump-Action.

There's really no reason to have Pump-Action on phasers anyways.
Doesn't Riker say it wasn't a phaser when checks out the burn marks and ash?

an admiral and a fleet captain on bunk beds rather than a suitable suite;
Shaw's being a dick.

But the attack especially (and the "intelligence" scenes on the with Raffi preceeding it) just didn't work, although I'm trying to work out why - it just felt so contextless.
It's setting up a plot thread that I assume will be gathered with the one Riker and Picard are on. We might see other threads with Troi, Worf and La Forge.

This is what Star Trek has tried to do since 2009.

1979.

9/10!

28 page thread already. Impressive TrekBBS.

You can definitely see the tonal shift in the third season of PIC. Great episode! Riker and Picard were on point. Riker defending the "fat" Enterprise-D. Crusher, in 5 minutes of screen time this episode, had more to do than the last two TNG movies combined. It was a very good season opener. Captain Shaw (he needs a swagger stick)... quite the dandy. I actually kind of like him and his prickish attitude. Although we can assume he won't be around long. Clearly he's not one that's intimidated by much. I'm sure Seven was posted with him so that he can try to reign her in. Good luck with that! Good visuals and SFX but, and I have a feeling I'm going to whine about this all season, turn on the damn lights!

Let the voyage begin!

Random theory re: Jack.

Jack is a secondary clone of Picard, physically about 10 years old, as I believe Shinzon was when he was sent to Remus, The second clone was kept in stasis for years after the shutting down of that Tal Shiar cloning program because he was suffering from an advanced version of Irumodic syndrome, and the Tal Shiar were considering ways to weaponize it. When Crusher discovered him, he was dying, and she was afraid to bring him to Picard, who had just had the whole traumatizing thing where his last clone had killed Data. She also knew Riker hates clones (having murdered a couple himself, as well as the Tom Riker situation), so she didn't think she'd have too many allies, Crusher also realized that genetic engineering would be the only way to keep the boy alive, but as we all know, it's illegal.

So she went off the grid to try and save the clone. She eventually found a means to save him, but after getting into a tangled web for resources. After being able to release him from stasis, she named him Jack after her late husband, and maybe because he was kind of a "brother" to the French Picard ("frere Jacques"), and adopted him as a son. All those shenanigans resulted in Crusher being where she is now with a 20+ years older Jack, on run from all the unscrupulous beings who helped ensure Jack's life but with a price, one she was unable to pay.

This episode represents just about everything I despise about modern genre shows and franchise films: it's overload with nostalgia for no good reason at all. Just about everything is a memberberry.

I'm a Star Trek fan. We're all Star Trek fans. I don't need the constant reminder of things from the past. We've all seen these episodes and films countless times. We know we're in this universe. We know this is a continuation The Next Generation.

I have to watch it a few more times before I form an opinion the episode, itself, but the nostalgia factor I just find very intrusive.

Gave it an 8. Mostly about getting the balls in the air. I assume a few balls will be tossed in next episode as well. We still have to see what Geordi, Deanna and Worf are up to. Had my fingers crossed that Raffi was undercover, glad that panned out. Hope Elnor at least gets a name drop down the road. Transporter hole was rather unexpected, I wonder if that's the missing tech Raffi was after? Digging Badass Bev. Character was woefully underserved in the past. Overall the tone is more in keeping with the TOS films than TNG or its movies. Picard and Riker were never quite the "cowboys" Shaw makes them out to be. But I guess to the 25th Century Fleeters, maybe they are.
