The Last of Us (HBO)

I recognized John Hannah right away. The other scientist looked extremely familiar to me but I couldn't place him. I mentally kicked myself a bit once you guys pointed out it was Christopher Heyerdahl. Duh!

Giving it a shot right now. How many people were upset at the "woke" angle they took with his daughter? (I've already seen people upset on the cast choice for Elle... I'm guessing because she's not as "cute" as the barely pubescent girl from the game?)

^ assuming you mean the racial component of the casting, if you take as a given that it will always be non-zero, it hasn't seemed that bad from what I've seen. I saw a couple saying that it's harder to connect Ellie as a surrogate with lots of others shutting that down.

It's odd with the comments about casting Bella Ramsey given that I don't think she looks any further from the game model than Pedro Pascal does from Joel. It seems once it aired most have been good with her in the role.

I'm just going with how I've seen some people react to... Everything. Has daughter was a white girl in the game and a mixed-race girl here. People lost their minds when cereal commercials did that 10 years ago, I can't imagine how they'd react now.

I got burned out on TWD mostly because all of the "good" characters were gone and Daryl and Carol weren't quite enough also the real-world pandemic kind of took some of the "fun" from the show. I still intend to go back and watch theist season/season and half I've not seen.

This premise seems good (but still in rhe pandemic spectrum which I guess is easier to swallow for me now?) but they different aspect of how the world works and it being 20 years into it.

Could be good. But, damn, the last thing I need is another subscription to a streaming service.

I played the game once, don't remember it will buy moments from this episode reminded me of it.

I had my concerns about the casting, but only because I'm such a big fan of the games. With the game's creator at the helm though, I had faith in his picks.

As for Bella Ramsey, I was sold on her as Ellie by the time she counted to 10.

From what i have seen, none. Nico Parker did such a good job, she really fit in to the story perfectly. In fact i liked her portray of Sarah better than the video game Sarah.

A very interesting point of view about "Video Game adaptions' curse"

Oh someone was upset by it, I guarantee it. The YT guy in the big dumb mask?

Being biracial is considered "woke"?

I dunno. I speak about the easily annoyed racist idiots who don't like anything outside the spectrum of the Alpha White Male. So giving our White Alpha a biracial daughter? I'm sure there's all kinds of YT and Blogs out there about it.

One other thing I forgot to mention before is how thrilled I am they brought Gustavo Santaolalla, it just wouldn't feel like The Last of Us without his music.

I know it's a bit of a platitude but don't do their work for them.

For those who haven't played the games, Marlene is played by the same actress who voiced and mocapped her in game, Merle Dandridge.

For those who have played the Half-Life series, she voices Alyx in those games (except for in Half-Life Alyx)

Whether it should be considered wrong is one thing but I would think racebent casting would certainly be a woke thing to do.
I am sure there will be someone on the internet who would scream loud about it.

But was race all that important to the orginal storyline? Were Joel and Tommy Latino in the video game?

if they weren't then why not point out their race beinding.

And isn't Nico Parker's dad white? Those of us who are half-white might look more like one of our parents, or sometimes a perfect blend. If we don't look"enough" of something, should be not be considered for a role?

Honestly, I like Nico Parker's character way better than Bella Ramsey's. I mean, Bella does act a brat very well (if that is how the character is supposed to be), but as someone who didnt play the game, i was rooting way more for Nico, and sorry to see that her character is gone.

Nico did a great job in establishing in a very short amount of time why she would mean so much to Joel.

As to the rest, I was just trying to answer the question matter-of-factly about whether recasting existing roles with diverse actors would be seen as woke, which I think it probably would.
