Craig Mazin (creator of the HBO miniseries Chernobyl) is adapting the story with Neil Druckmann, creative director and writer of the two video games. Johan Renck (Breaking Bad, Vikings, Chernobyl) was going to direct the pilot and possibly more episodes, but had to drop out due to a scheduling conflict. Kantemir Balagov (Beanpole) is the new director. Bella Ramsey (Game of Thrones, His Dark Materials) has been cast as Ellie. Pedro Pascal (Narcos, The Mandalorian) has been cast as Joel.
Pedro is also from Game of Thrones. I want everyone to be from GoT. Even the Clickers being the Wights.
Well so far I've liked the two leads in everything they've done so far. And the fact that Neil Druckmann is involved makes me optimistic about the show.
I'm on the fence. The premise is full on potential, but there is any movie/tv show based on a videogame that is considered really good? I mean, the best according to RT is Detective Pikachu (68%)
I was surprised how much I liked it too. It had some heartwarming and funny moments "Hipsters" *GASP* How dare you!"
Not a gamer, I take it? I'm very, very optimistic due to the direct involvement of Neil Druckman, who was one of the main creatives behind both games. I didn't make it to the point in GoT where they introduced the girl playing Ellie, but I do like Pedro Pascale. Very happy with that casting. I'm looking forward to seeing who they bring in for the rest of the cast.
In America? Not really. There's been a lot of very good anime that I've liked that were adapted from video games. Perhaps being a tv series will allow it to develop better than turning it into a one-off movie.
Games have come a long way since Mario and Sonic. I haven't played the sequel but the first Last of Us game has a storyline and premise that's as good as or better than movies of its ilk. And the sequence where they Spoiler encounter the roaming giraffe is a magical and moving moment that many movies fail to achieve.
I wonder if they'll bring back Annie Wersching as Tess. The pretty much used her appearance for the character, and I think she could still pull it off.
Speaking of video game stories, the mass effect trilogy is some of the most engrossing sci-fi ever written.
There are plenty of good game properties to base movies on. The key is in the narratives and settings. Older games had less narrative, but now you have a lot of narrative-driven games. I could easily see movies based on God of War, Ghosts of Tsushima, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc, and those are just Sony properties. I think narratives and settings have gotten so much better in the last few decades.
Assassins Creed is supposed to be getting a tv series which would work very well. Each season could be a different era
Yeah, in fact before the movie was announced, I thought it would have made a good series. They could set it during the first game with Altair. Or they could do a sort of anthology where each season you'd see one of the different eras and locations.
I’m in. I love Pedro Pascal in Narcos (and as Mando of course) and I love Last Of Us, so, it’s a “yes please” from me.
Playstation is supposed to have a whole collection of movies and shows in development based on their games, and I could definitely see at least one or two of those being part of it.
I'm excited about that because, in my opinion, Last of Us is a game with a great story but weak gameplay.
