Yeah, the I-V ship was 5 miles long.
But the prison had to have been there before because else they wouldn’t have had any prisoners to revive.

This show is very thin on continuity, aside from the occasional reference to another episode.

The model from series VIII was clearly so much longer, the "original design" concept worked. Then in the later series', it was back to the shorter model anyway. So it could be their way of de-canonizing series VIII (outside of that one reference to Rimmer saving the day) ;)

On a meta level, they (Doug) realised the new ship (which they'd sinfully put on the RD Remastered for series I and II) was shit and they went back to the better version.

And for today's random RD quote:

My Hat!!! I've buurned my sacred hat.

I'm reaching here, but...perhaps the nanos reconstructed the prisoners based on JMC personnel files?

So they could have rebuilt crewmembers who weren't originally there.

I mean, if they can rebuild parts of the ship that weren't there before, perhaps they could do the same for crew?

    as I said...reaching.

If you want to that’s grand. I’ll take the simpler tack that in the 5 mile long space ship, the secret prison level was always there and that we’d just not seen it before because it was secret and neither Lister nor Rimmer knew about it and it didn’t signify in their situation for Holly to mention it.

Holly probably forgot. Senility and all that. Why someone as high up in rank as maintenence technician didn’t know is anyones guess.

still unclear why to me why there’s a prison though, maybe it was explained.

High up in rank? The only one that didn't outrank Lister and Rimmer was the ship's parrot, and that's only because they didn't have one. They outranked the laboratory mice IIRC.

“The phrase ‘cargo bay doors’ does not appear to be in my lexicon”

And do you know, for years I heard lexicon as Mexican and thought it was a deliberately written mistake for Holly because of what was happening to her lexicon in that scene. I think because it’s obscured by a laugh or other sound effect.

I think “the phrase cargo at doors does not appear in my Mexican” is funnier.

I disagree with the opinion that Back in the Red is as all that bad. I especially liked Pete.

“Do you want the long or the short version?”
    “Ooh…long.”
    “You’re finished”
    “What’s your the short version”
    “Bye”

Whilst I respect your right to your opinion, I can't agree on Pete. I find it cringe-worthy all the way through.

In fact, if I were guilty and convicted of a capital crime and sentenced to a fate worse than death, I think it would be tied to a chair with my eyes forced open with Pete on in a perpetual loop. I'd be begging for the needle in no time.

But, you know, no one ever said an opinion had to be rational, right?

    We can agree on that.
    The smeg-ups are always funny.
    Especially poor Robert.

    Of course it's gonna work.

    LISTER
They're hard, aren't they? Of course they like curries. If a T-Rex was a

I've finished the series. Overall I enjoyed the show a lot and I'm glad I gave it a solid chance, but its definitely a show that had its golden period and then never really reached the same heights again. Series X, XII, and XII ended up being very watchable, with a few stand out episodes, which puts them far above series VII or VIII but still nowhere near as good as I-VI. The show definitely lost something important when Rob Grant left, but apparently he's also the reason that we'll probably never get any new Red Dwarf ever again post-Promised Land so I wish he'd just stayed away (Apparently he helped screw over Doug Naylor after having not done a single thing for the show for almost 30 years, its kind of weird to basically destroy a franchise that you voluntarily left when its in the twilight of its run as it is).

Anyway, here's my final various rankings for the show:

    Favorite Episodes:
S1 Ep 02 - Future Echoes (Still my favorite episode overall)
S2 Ep 03 - Thanks for the Memory
    S3 Ep 05 - Timeslides
    S4 Ep 05 - Dimension Jump
    S5 Ep 04 - Quarantine
    S6 Ep 05 - Rimmerworld
    S7 Ep 01 - Tikka to Ride
    S8 Ep 04 - Cassandra
    S9/BTE - N/A
    S10 Ep 02 - Fathers & Suns
    S11 Ep 04 - Officer Rimmer
    S12 Ep 06 - Skipper
    Promised Land - N/A

Worst Episode, to me, is still S7 Ep04 Duct Soup (With an honorable mention to the Red Dwarf USA pilot)

Series Ranking: (Series VII and VIII are the only outright bad ones in my opinion, with XI, PL and BTE being mediocre, and X and XII being ok, but I-VI are much better then everything else)
    1. Series III
    2. Series II
    3. Series I
    4. Series IV
    5. Series V
    6. Series VI
    7. Series X
    8. Series XII
    9. Series XI
    10. Promised Land
    11. Back to Earth
    12. Series VII
    13. Series VIII

    Main Character Ranking:
    1. Kryten (Except Series 7)
    2. Cat
    3. Holly (Hattie)
    4. Rimmer
    5. Lister
    6. Holly (Original Version)
    7. Kristine Kochanski

I had a lot of fun with the show. I hope the weird legal BS clears up to at least allow the show a real send off before the cast is literally gone, but either way its a memorable show that I'm glad I finally got to experience.

I’m not sure that’s an entirely fair summarisation of what’s currently still ongoing.

Rob and Doug (and a handful of others) started Grant Naylor, the company which produces Red Dwarf and which holds the rights together. Though Grant left the writing partnership, he remained (and remains) a partner in Grant Naylor, the company.

The contention of the other Grant Naylor partners was that Doug Naylor was compromising the financial security of the company for which they all shared responsibility. They stepped in to prevent Naylor from doing so. In retaliation, Naylor accused them of not paying invoices he made against the company going back to 2018 and right up to the pitching process for the two further specials to follow up on The Promised Land.

Grant and Ed Bye have publicly stated that it’s in their financial self-interest to continue to make Red Dwarf (and it’s only a handful of years ago that Rob came back to participate in the Red Dwarf AA adverts, which led to brief hopes of a re-coupling of the writing partnership) but the way Naylor was doing it meant that, as said above, the financial security of Grant Naylor wasn’t secured. So they, as a group, had to step in to protect their company.

Since then, Naylor has started proceedings petitioning the courts that he be awarded the sole rights of Red Dwarf. Which is barmy.

I don’t think there’s a good guy or a bad guy here. But there is an element of obstinacy on both sides.

Well its obviously a complex issue, although I'd need more info about what Naylor was supposedly doing to "compromise financial security" to change my general opinion on Rob Grant. All Naylor has been doing, seemingly, is making as much Red Dwarf as he can get the resources to make. Sure you could argue that he shouldn't be writing the majority of the episodes/specials anymore, but I don't think its as bad as compromising financial security, at least not post- Series VIII.

Having a whole company just to apparently run Red dwarf seems ridiculous, especially since Naylor seems to be literally the only person involved with that company that actually works on the show. It feels like a bunch of people who do nothing are trying to screw over the only co-creator of the show that actually cares about the show, and I'm not sure what their end goal is. What if the cast stands by Naylor and just doesn't come back, would Grant & Co try to reboot the show?

It doesn't help that Rob grant has had basically no successful projects since leaving Red Dwarf from what I can see, and literally no TV projects (that got made, at least) since a show in 2000 called "The Strangerers". So it looks, from the outside at least, like a power grab from someone whose career went nowhere after he stopped working on Red Dwarf. Rob Grant was essential to the golden age of Red dwarf, I'm convinced of that, but I can't imagine the show would get better with a writer who has basically been retired (even if not by choice) from TV writing for 23-ish years.

Again, thats just what it seems to be, if there end up being updates I will take new information into account. I'm just disappointed that Red dwarf is probably done, it had gotten back up to the point of being at least watchable and a good time even if it was not as good as its golden age, and I'd have liked to have at least had a bit of closure one way or another.
