Ehh, that's just as unconvincing as the stuff I hear around here. It reads like it's written by someone who compares it to Star Wars: Rebels because their familiarity with animated shows is very limited, so that's the only reference they have available. The comparison to Rebels' animation style is, if anything, an insult to Prodigy's vastly superior animation. Rebels's style was always way too bouncy and cartoonish for me. The Star Wars kids' shows are not really great examples of CG kids' animation from a quality standpoint (Resistance was hideous and looked like a cel-shaded show from the early 2000s), while Prodigy is just about the best I've seen.
Beyond that, it does exactly the same thing as the posts here -- it says it "feels more like a Star Wars story" without explaining what that means.
And it is deeply sad that your pool of cultural references for space-based sci-fi is so narrow that you see those as the only options. I mean, Star Wars is a hodgepodge of elements from everything that came before it, including Star Trek. Saying that something reminds you of Star Wars is the sci-fi equivalent of saying it tastes like chicken.
I'll grant that Gwyn's design is vaguely similar to The Clone Wars's character designs, which were meant to evoke Gerry Anderson's wooden Supermarionation figures and thus had "carved"-looking hair. As for the rest, I don't see it. There are plenty of robots out there beyond Star Wars.
Right. The premise is similar to the old Nickelodeon TV series Space Cases created by Peter David and Bill Mumy, and there are vague similarities to Blake's 7 as well, although in that series, the Federation were the bad guys and the super-advanced alien mystery ship wasn't theirs. There's also a similarity to Farscape. With particular reference to the young adult focus, you could probably find similar stories in the old "juveniles" of 1940s-50s prose science fiction, the sort of thing that Robert A. Heinlein and Isaac Asimov were known for writing, although I'm not familiar enough with the subgenre to know of any examples.

Nope, Star Trek definitely came first but some clever clogs who wanted more action and mainstream recognition decided to replace the word ‘Trek’ with ‘Wars’ and start his own franchise. Lucas then proceeded to launch his new franchise on the back of Trek’s popularity. It happened a long time ago though, in a galaxy far, far away… so better best forgotten. But why not? From what I know of Star Wars it is set in some form of fantasy sci fi land with no connection to scientific reality. BUT. What if Star Wars happened in the same Star Trek galaxy shortly after the the times of the Progenitors and Presevers? Possibly even *before* if the galaxy was created earlier and these species had to (re?)seed it after previous intergalactic altercations? Star Wars could be Star Trek’s past, from a time even before the Voth? From a time before everything was wiped out by doomsday weapons and the like. But I think that in Star Wars they called such things Death Stars and Imperial Marching Ships etc.
I've seen people attempt to do it. It's not interesting, it's fan service on overload and isn't fun.

Give me a few days. I shall have my vengeance upon JJ Abrams for the destruction of Romulus, Remus and Vulcan via some Star Wars fan-fic. I shall avenge the Vulcan, Romulan and Reman peoples! I have never seen Star Wars though so hopefully it does not offend anyone, but I think I get the gist of the storyline. Good vs evil and fancy laser swords? Blasters instead of phasers? Stupid politics? Meh.

I'm sorry, but the Dauntless has got to be the most hideous Starfleet ship I've ever seen. I wish they'd gone with the Vesta class from the novels instead.

The Dauntless has terrible proportions. Definitely would have preferred the Vesta.
Since Mark created the design for Pocket Books' Ships of the Line calendar and novel covers, rather than as an independent fan effort, I'd imagine he was under contract much like us novelists, which would mean that Paramount already owns his design. At least, I'd be surprised if it were otherwise. After all, the Titan/Luna Class design was also created for the novels, and they were able to use it in Lower Decks.
This was 10 years ago so things could have changed, but Cryptic Studios and CBS had to negotiate with Mark to get the rights to put the Vesta in Star Trek Online. Cryptic's EP at the time said it was a pain in the ass to work out.

Maybe the contracts are different for the calendars, then.
I don't see why it should. I've pitched novels to Pocket from time to time, but when they were approved, the contract language was the same as when they approached me first.
