DC Movies - To Infinity and Beyond

We spend a lot of time arguing over the direction of the movies and such but I can't believe some of the shitty replies James Gunn gets for just tweeting "My heart is with @JeremyRenner". Helps put in perspective that at the end of the day these are just movies about guys running around in tights and we shouldn't get too caught up in all this.

I'm enjoying would ridiculously fickle the "fans" have shown themselves to be. When he was announced everyone was cheering and saying what a rebirth this would be for the DCEU...then when it IS an actual rebirth (clean slate) so many turned on him, even though he's not the one making these decisions unilaterally.

I don't think there's a fickleness. I think the ones being the loudest were always ready to pounce once they finally realized it was going to be a clean slate. Before WB flat out announced it was over, they were in denial and still thought there was a chance.

Some behind the scenes scuttlebutt on the recent goings-on at WB, though it’s nothing really that we didn’t know or couldn’t have guessed https://trib.al/8KsOQTd?fbclid=IwAR1d9D473gLC9LXNdrb7BbRgRKcTdNJ6B4ZigjNNyrktxU7CwLHrM9Si5Ak
Thanks for posting this... I was intrigued reading this too.

I understand the Rock "going around" people... because, really, whoever was "in.charge" seems to keep changing.

Can someone remind me of the schedule changes and when things were announced? I vaguely recall at one point that Shazam (or was it Flash), Black adam and Aquaman were going to be released basically monthly from. SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER to December. Did I remember that right?

And the decision to release Black Adam so close to Black Panther... surely the Rock saw this as a bad idea. (In hindsight... a release at the end of September could have done wonders)

The article also mentioned that Cavill was "booted in 2018"... how solid is that?? I know a lot of people felt that way, but that sure wasn't solid... especially after the Snyer cut came out.

Batfleck is the first Batman who is genuinely terrifying. It’s a shame we didn’t get more.

Batman was a character created with a clear image and purpose as stated by Wayne in Batman #1:

"...so my disguise must be able to strike terror into their own hearts. I must be a creature of the night, black, terrible..."

Affleck captured that which Batman was supposed to be. Bale had his own take and leaned more on the frightening side than any other character trait, but I agree that Affleck was the representation of Batman as a frightening force against criminals.

There were reasons why many thought there was a chance for the DCEU to continue, thanks to several media announcements, including one about Cavill resuming the role of Superman. Then WB pulled the rug out from under them. I see no "in denial" scenario involving this.

I agree with you on this. And I think the truth is WB doesn't know what they want from the DC property other than movies that make Marvel numbers without putting in the effort and time that would take.

There were more reasons to see that there wasn't a chance. Those reasons were shot down by the usual suspects, but the evidence was clear from the get-go.

Example, there's a reason Johnson had to go around everybody's back to get that Cavill appearance. It was always an uphill battle, right from day 1. You obviously don't start a job by getting people angry with your actions (remember when people here said how important Johnson was to the franchise, they HAD to keep someone like him happy? Couldn't have been more in error). And all of this was out there for us to see and read between the lines for ourselves with what was going on.

This conversation might be a lot different had Black Adam put up some big numbers. The Rock was making a big power move gamble that didn't pan out.

True, at the end of the day, all they want is money. Ezra Miller proves that.

Bringing Cavill back as Superman was the only thing Johnson was right about. That brief cameo was probably created the biggest buzz and most positive word of mouth that Black Adam received, and people were excited that Cavill was back.

Is that what you really want buzz about, though?
The start of a new franchise with new characters, a new super team, and a brand new anti-hero never before seen on screen starring one of the biggest names in Hollywood and the only major buzz about the movie is 4 seconds of footage?

Shocking that the movie's not getting a sequel. (I say even though I really liked parts of it and would have LOVED to see a deeper exploration of the wasted JSA)

Oh yeah, no, I agree, it's not great that the most positive thing about BA was a post-credits cameo from Henry Cavill.

I just meant that the only thing Johnson was right about was bringing back Cavill as Superman, because people really liked him.

A relative of mine who works on the Warner Brothers lot recalled seeing Affleck working with Momoa on the set for "Aquaman 2". And this was before James Gunn was hired to act as one of the new showrunners for DC films. And this was before Patty Jenkins backed out of directing and co-writing the third Wonder Woman movie for Gadot. So yeah, there is a reason why I still don't buy the "in denial" scenario.

Honestly I'd put Black Adam in the Top 5 DC films made since the DCEU started/MoS released (whether its DCEU stuff or not, and admittedly it would be at #5), but I get why its not getting a sequel, especially with Gunn taking over and the movie underperforming (it deserved better, in my opinion). I really wish we'd seen Black Adam interact with his actual arch nemesis/sometimes ally Shazam, and it sucks that the JSA finally got to the big screen to then immediately go back to probably never being shown or even mentioned in a DC film ever again.

That said, if the rumors of fucking Ezra Miller potentially still playing The Flash after his first movie end up being true, I'll be absolutely livid that they ended Black Adam in the films but kept the Terror of Hawaii employed. Hopefully those rumors are just to keep Miller happy until the movie releases and they officially drop him, although I could see the WB/Discovery executives forcing Gunn to use him, because the WB/D people seem obsessed with making the worst choices possible :sigh:
