NFL 2022: The Fall of the "Immunized" Aaron Rodgers

Tonight's Bills-Bengals game has been suspended in the first quarter after Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed after a big hit to the chest while being tackled. He was given CPR on the field and taken away by ambulance; no word yet on his condition. :(

correction: Hamlin took the hit to the chest while he was tackling the Bengals' Tee Harris. Hamlin got up and then promptly collapsed.

I was watching it on mute at a bar, any word on what's going on with him? After the play he just stood up like nothing was wrong then just collapsed. It wasn't even clear whether it happened as a result of the hit, like maybe he had an undiagnosed heart condition.

There several theories going around. Most think it was a cardiac event of some kind. Getting hit in the chest can interrupt heart rhythms and he did get dinged.

Took the NFL way too long to call the game tonight. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if both coaches decided they weren't playing after that. They were talking about them continuing play after 5 minutes... 5. Ugh.

It sounds like the players and coaches on both teams decided they weren't resuming the game, and I can't blame them.

There was no way that game was resuming without the hospital telling them "He'll be fine."

It just seems so strange just a hit to the chest would cause that, given that nothing like this has ever happened in the NFL before to my knowledge or even in combat sports. In boxing you see troubles from taking uppercuts that damage neural connections, you don't hear about people having cardiac events from getting hit in the chest.

There are a few different ways it can happen. It basically screws up the heart's rhythm either electrically or through impact and the heart just doesn't start up correctly after that. I don't remember the medical term for it but it can happen more specifically with something like a baseball hitting the ribcage above the heart. In this case it would be another player's helmet.

Commotio Cortis.

Not saying that’s what it was, but that’s the phenomenon to which you’re referring.

Poor kid.

Official statement from the Buffalo Bills:

Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition. (via Twitter)

Not a doctor, but I suspect it’s possible he had a clot somewhere else and the hit jostled it free, making it get stuck in a more serious location. It might explain the delayed reaction between the hit and the collapse.

A lot of people online and on TV keep blaming football for this and it did not appear the hit caused it imo.

He made a tackle which did not appear particularly hard. In fact, pretty routine imo. He got up quite gingerly looking perfectly normal and took a step, stopped a moment, then fell over.

Zero visual evidence imo his collapse was anything hit related except for the timing. It seems like one of those times we hear about in other places in life where it just suddenly happens with little apparent cause from whatever the victim may be doing.

It probably imo, would have happened at that time of day regardless of his activity. Unlike most who this occurs to, he was lucky to have trained medical professionals around or it might have been his end too.

At this point, anything is possible. We just don't have enough information.

Having said that, the odds that a healthy (as far as we know) 24 year old would take a blow to the chest, then immediately have a cardiac arrest completely unrelated and coincidental, seems rather low to me. Especially when there's an obvious and well-known explanation that matches what we saw: Commotio Cordis.
  • Look for an athlete who was hit in the chest by an object such as a baseball, baseball bat, or lacrosse ball
  • There should be no apparent trauma
  • The athlete will typically stumble forward for a few seconds, which is followed by unconsciousness, no breathing, and no pulse
  • An AED will indicate the athlete is in ventricular fibrillation

And if it turns out that CC is the culprit, well...the NFL wouldn't really be to blame anyway. That's a one in a million shot. As far as I know it's never happened in 100 years of professional football.

In the end, whatever the cause turns out to be, it's a real shame. I know people from all over are rooting for this young man.

Justin Fields ruled out for Sunday's game with a hip injury. No QB rushing record for him and a guaranteed loss ........ OK, the loss was guaranteed anyway, but....

What with at least another 2 injuries on the o-line last week, it's a death sentence for whatever QB they throw out there.

Nathan Peterman. His mediocrity will keep him intact

Pro Bowl receiver Davante Adams said Wednesday he wants to return to the Las Vegas Raiders next season -- despite the apparent impending departure of his good friend Derek Carr and an underwhelming season by a team expected to return to the playoffs -- and also hopes to be kept in the loop by coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler when it comes to choosing next season's quarterback.
This guy spent too much time around Aaron Rodgers. They need to tell him where to go as far as that garbage.
