What grade would you give the Marvel Cinematic Universe? (Ever-Changing Question)

Riri was a MacGuffin, not a character. She had no arc, no agency, and just sort of...stood around and watched while the entire movie happened except for two action scenes.

Even Ross got a more complete arc, and he was onscreen for maybe 10 minutes tops.

The movie could have worked just as well if the Wakandans were trying to capture a thing rather than a person, and could have been at least 20 minutes shorter.

That really would not have worked at all.

I dunno. Phase 3 mostly kept to what Phases 1/2 did, and kept the teases of additional stories stuck in the end credits. Obviously some of the movies were set up as more-or-less sequels to Civil War (Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther), and a lot of movies were more interconnected than they really needed to be (Hulk didn't need to effectively costar in Ragnorok for the movie to work) but in general I think the lack of a tightly-connected TV universe kept the movies pretty disciplined.

Did it? I thought Phase 3 featured so much sloppy writing. Of all the films during that phase, the only ones I actually liked were "Black Panther", "Ant-Man & the Wasp" (despite the weak villain), "Captain Marvel" and "Infinity War" (didn't love it though).

Zoe Saldaña addresses Guardians script gaffe, wants to work with filmmakers who "know that I am an adult"

Some key points:

Zoe Saldaña still has at least one more Marvel movie to promote, but now that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 is in the can, her vibe is very “Nicole Kidman after signing the Tom Cruise divorce papers” about her relationship with the MCU. She recently said she “felt artistically stuck in my craft of not being able to expand or grow or challenge myself” during her years in the superhero franchise. Now, she has another grievance to air.

This concerns the hubbub around her February Instagram post, in which she donned Gamora green while reading the GOTG 3 script. She quickly had to take it down “because of Marvel Security.” Other MCU stars have discussed the intense secrecy around the scripts—sometimes the studio and directors give the actors false pages; sometimes, the full script can only be read for a limited amount of time in a locked room on an iPad. Saldaña, quite reasonably, tells InStyle that these methods “can be annoying sometimes.”

“That’s not cool, because you have to memorize, you have to prepare, you have to do research. And I tend to take myself a little too seriously sometimes,” she says of the limited time she had with her script pages. “I really enjoy working with filmmakers that don’t underestimate my intelligence and know that I am an adult. I will be discreet. It is as important to me as it is for him or her that I don’t let these scripts out of my sight.”

Saldaña has exercised some discretion by couching her criticism in vague terms, but it sure sounds like she’s saying Marvel treats their actors like kids.

Some might say the author of this article is projecting with that last line, but it would be interesting to hear other MCU actors' takes on how they are treated in this regard.

Onto another MCU question...how do you think "no COVID" would have changed the MCU?

My understanding is this was the planned 2020 release order:
  • Black Widow
  • Eternals
  • The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Then this was 2021:
  • Wandavision
  • Shang-Chi
  • Multiverse of Madness
  • Loki
  • Spider-Man: NWH
  • Thor: Love & Thunder
  • Hawkeye
I'm sure 2020's ticket sales would have been better, but considering the receptions for the three projects with an original release date of 2020 were...mixed...I would guess the "Phase 4 sucks" contingent would be even louder.

Instead MCU TV kicked off with WandaVision (which impressed) and the kinda disappointing Black Widow was followed up by the more positively-received Shang-Chi.

Yeah, it might be a bit excessive, but we have seen so may leaks, that I kinda can't blame for being extra cautious.
I'm thinking at this point the Disney and Marvel higher ups are probably wish they could just duct tape Mark Ruffalo and Tom Holland's mouths shut from the time they first read the script until the movie is out.

Since a few others are doing their phase 4 lists of from best down I thought I'd throw in mine.

Spiderman: No Way Home
Wanda Vision
Shang Chi
Hawkeye
Black Panther
Moonknight
Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness
The Falcon and Winter Solider
Black Widow
What If...?
She Hulk
Eternals
Loki
Ms. Marvel
Thor Love and Thunder

Of the list the ones that really impressed me were Spiderman, WandaVision, Shang Chi and Hawkeye. Anything after Moonknight was enjoyable but felt unpolished and carelessly put together or rushed when compared to previous phases. Doesn't change anything though for me. Marvel have my money forever.

Yeah, but then there is Alfred Molina casually letting everything out of the bag. Or Gary Oldman leaving a script behind in a hotel room.

Oh, so New Groot is not a clone or rebirth of Old Groot, that's why he doesn't look the same

https://tvline.com/2022/11/28/guardians-of-the-galaxy-holiday-special-gobots-swole-groot/

Gunn explained on Twitter that Swole Groot, being a progeny and not a clone of his sire who starred in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, is simply “getting bigger, outward as well as upward. As you can see by now, he has a different, stockier physiology (and a more outgoing personality) than his father did.”

Guardians Groot“He’s much broader than OG Groot ever was,” Gunn reiterated. “He’s a totally different Groot.”

Getting back around to the phase iv rankings which I didn't have time to comment on before:

WandaVision
Shang-Chi
Wakanda Forever
Multiverse of Madness
Werewolf by Night

No Way Home
Black Widow
Love and Thunder
Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Loki
What If?
Guardians Holiday Special
She-Hulk

Ms. Marvel
Moon Knight
Eternals
Hawkeye

The first five are all, imo, among the best MCU projects ever made. The second group is more flawed but still tons of fun. Even in the extra-flawed final group, the only project I didn't at least mostly enjoy was Hawkeye.

I didn't see all of the Phase 4 productions. What can I say? In fact, I have yet to see "Wakanda Forever". I'll probably get around to it. But here are my rankings of those I've seen:

"Eternals"
"Hawkeye"
"WandaVision"
"Shang-Chi"
"What If?"
"Ms. Marvel"
"Black Widow"
"Moon Knight"
"Loki"
"No Way Home"
"She-Hulk"
"The Falcon and the Winter Soldier"
"Love and Thunder"

I haven't seen the others. Not one of these productions are on the same level as "Captain America: The Winter Soldier", "Guardians of the Galaxy", "Black Panther" or "The Avengers" in my eyes.
