What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

Well. No.

To be clear I don't mean disrespect to Discovery, Strange New Worlds or Picard. I really enjoyed Picard (except for the 400 year gap with the borg) but I haven't gotten through Discovery and Strange New Worlds yet. I started off looking at what people have said about the continuity errors and because of that initially I entirely boycotted all new Trek. Continuity, at least to the amount it was kept up to Enterprise was and is important to me. When I was sick, I relied upon the continuity of Star Trek to give me a clear picture of this Star Trek universe, it was my reality in my darkest times, and I was able to shrug aside the minor inconsistencies in the canon and I could tell the writers and producers did their best and that's what mattered to me. After a while I decided to give new Star Trek a chance, but with the view that the major inconsistencies are explained by there being a different timeline. In this way, I don't have to worry about whether the writers and producers don't care enough to research the canon before writing, I can simply say that it's another timeline or universe that can be enjoyed as the old can be without there being contradictions all the time. I wanted to enjoy the new series' and to do that I had to make the separation. It doesn't mean in my view that the new is illegitimate, just a recognition that it is different and tells a different story.

Star Trek under Alex Kurtzman is a different timeline, the Alex Kurtzman timeline.

I'm sure the purpose of this thread is not to be-- Poster: "I have a controversial opinion!" Everyone else: "YOU'RE WRONG!" I mean, that's why it's controversial.

BUT... I think to a lot of people that's not even a controversial opinion. Heck, wasn't that even conventional wisdom at some point?

I don't agree, of course. It's meant to be the same timeline even if you don't like what they're doing. And I often don't like what they're doing.

Calling NEMESIS a 'turkey' is an insult to turkeys everywhere. At least they are delicious, and good with gravy.

:)

I admit, when my wife makes me watch Insurrection and Nemesis I don't find either of them TERRIBLE (although certainly not great). And I usually find Nemesis more interesting overall.

I'd say you're looking at the older Trek through rose colored glasses/Nostalgia goggles. The continuity was always a bit shaky, a bit slapdash, make it up as they went along.

The current writers and producers seem quite aware of the past and have incorporated it into their productions. And like their predecessors they aren't slavish in their "devotion".

Fine. It's a slug slimed sack of rat guts and cat vomit, a scab picked pimple squeezing finger bandage, and a week-old maggotburger with everything on it and flies on the side. Better?

:techman:

This is more acceptable.

I never thought INSURRECTION was terrible, but it was not great, either. I will say NEMESIS is better than ST '09 and INTO DARKNESS, but only barely.

Because no franchise is worth "devotion," in terms of slavish adherence.

I don't know if this is a controversial opinion, but STAR TREK: PICARD would never have happened if NEMESIS wasn't filmed.
It's not an opinion. It's the truth. PIC exists because the people with the power to make things happen weren't happy with the way the TNG Movies went. That's why I'm with them. Deep down, they know. They're one of us. Or, at the very least, I feel like I'm one of them. Not being too far apart in age, Terry Matalas and I even grew up with the same things. So I trust him.

NEM is :censored: “2001: A Space Odyssey” compared to INS
Insurrection gave us Riker/Troi. ;)
Nemesis gave us Data's death.
Need I say more?

I guess I can understand that... I wasn't overjoyed either.

Insurrection was a lower mid-tier 2 parter episode.

Nemesis had no redeeming qualities at all outside of cool looking space battles. And I don't care about those because Trek has never done space battles even half as well as other franchises.

Nemesis could have been improved by the following:
1. At the end of Insurrection, have a SIX MONTHS LATER placard and then have the Riker-Troi wedding. :adore:

2. Have Riker and Troi go off together to Riker's new command on the Titan. Data puts on a red uniform and three pips and takes his place as the Enterprise E's first officer.

3. Delete the rest of the :censored:ing movie. Do something with the DS9 crew, or the VOY crew, or just end the series at nine movies.

They needed to do a 10th movie. Insurrection isn't Final Film Material. They should've just made Nemesis a better movie or done a different movie altogether. If they stopped after Insurrection, people would've asked, "What the Hell happened?! Why can't they make another movie as good as First Contact?" People in 1998 weren't done with TNG yet, they were just getting restless. In 2002, they were done. They were looking backward to the newly released DVD Sets.

Actually, reverse my last. Instead of Riker leaving, have Picard stay with the Baku, and Riker takes over as captain. That closes the arc that began when Picard's brother and nephew died: he's able to live the good life with that lady he met, forgot her name. Riker gets the job he held out 10+ years for, Troi gets Riker, Data still gets his red uniform, yadda yadda yadda.
