Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

“Make some old school Star Trek now! On your marks, get set…. GO!” then the producers and writers all scrambled to get as much fanwa*nk material and legacy characters as possible and cram it all in to one final season.

Finally. To compare, STO is both a Star Trek themepark but also has its own lore and storylines. They bring legacy characters back when possible, e.g. even Kim Rhodes to voice Jhet'leya or Lisa LoCicero to play Miral Paris. The novels of the First Splinter timeline were more about continuing the characters' lives and sufferings but also included legacy character - including Moriarty and post-mortem Soran.

A plot can be great or poor regardless of the amount of fanservice.
Speaking only for myself, my enjoyment increases when continuity shows and legacy content is included.

Some people may argue that having too much continuity and legacy content would confuse new and casual fans. I disagree, to new and casual fans it makes absolutely no difference. To long time fans it *does* make a difference though.

A new fan would not know that new characters are not ‘legacy’. Any character would be ‘new’ to them. All characters have a backstory too, you can invent a new character and give them an off screen backstory or you can pick a legacy character with an established backstory that casual fans may want to look back on, encouraging them to watch older episodes and series.

For example, if Seven of Nine gets a spin-off I bet that everyone would recommend to new fans old Voyager episodes such as Scorpion, The Gift, The Raven, Dark Frontier etc.

New characters are also essential to keep things fresh and to add to an expanding universe, but writers should not be scared to bring old characters back from *all* of the previous series. It is good news for the fans, and makes no difference whatsoever to casual fans. Casual fans may even recognise some of them.

I enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 of Picard but it’s almost like TPTB were given instructions from the studio to make Star Trek ‘lite’ with minimum legacy character and references etc but not actually make *real* Star Trek that fits with Berman (and before) era canon and style. For season 3 it’s like the studio told TBTB that now they can make real Star Trek…. At the end of season two, after teasing us with the scenes on the Stargazer, the ‘money men’ probably said “Make some old school Star Trek now! On your marks, get set…. GO!” then the producers and writers all scrambled to get as much fanwa*nk material and legacy characters as possible and cram it all in to one final season.
And it's frustrating as fuck. Stop trying to "make Star Trek " and just tell good stories.

TNG did fine without having Legacy TOS characters very often.

he ‘money men’ probably said “Make some old school Star Trek now! On your marks, get set…. GO!”
No it was all Terry.

Yes, but TNG was not based on legacy Characters. Picard is based on a major even *legendary* legacy character(s) so why not bring the rest of his/their legacy along for the ride from the beginning? Actually, they did bring some of Seven’s past back but ended up killing it off. I know that we all have a past and sometimes we leave those pasts behind, but TNG fans want payoff when it comes to their leading man. It looks like we have had to wait 3 seasons for a true payoff in a Trekverse more familiar which *hopefully* is more attuned to the one we know and love. Like I said, new viewers or casual fans would not know the difference either way. It’s still Star Trek to them regardless of the inclusion of legacy characters or not. Please don’t think that I am complaining about Picard season 1 and 2, like I said I *did* enjoy them. But I think season 3 is what I (and most other people) have been waiting for.

And while I don't care for TNG I definitely think it is the better model to follow when creating a new show. What I see now is the efforts to create a "payoff" or "happily ever after" for the characters and none of that is very satisfying, nor realistic in terms of storytelling.

I think that each show should tangentially refer to the other and then do its own thing. Like TNG.
It’s still Star Trek to them regardless of the inclusion of legacy characters or not.
It's still all Star Trek to me. Nothing about Season 1 or 2 says "This isn't Star Trek" and Season 3 tells me " we're trying too hard to please the fans." It's not confidence building because I think it is going about storytelling the wrong way.

That worked because it wasn't set in a period we were familiar with. At all. Discovery has been miles better since they moved into a period we are unfamiliar with too, though I felt that the "damage" was already done.

Wow, Titan-A blown out of the sky by the Shrike. They will need another hero ship to replace it at this rate….

Seven of Nine will also need a transfer to this ship, especially if the Captain has been killed in combat.

In such a scenario what do you think that this ship would be called? I speculate… ‘Enterprise’. :D:adore:

Lore looks so old. He should not. In 2022, when even amateurs can create deep-fake, they don't do that. I don't understand.

And maybe Lore wants to look more human in appearance? After being reassembled at some point following the events of "Descent, Part II(TNG)" in early 2370 perhaps he saw being able to infiltrate a group of humans or humanoids more easily without suspicion of being an artificial life form as an advantage? Or maybe he wanted to one-up his brother and do something Data never did: alter his epidermis to appear truly human?

The actors aren't being very subtle when they're saying "watch this if you want more". I'd be glad if Season 3 was just good.

Well I just got season 2 just now, ordered the box set. I'm excited to watch it. Just have to ask for an overall opinion but what did most of you think of the full season 2?

It was bad. One of Trek's worst seasons. I wish I had a better opinion to give you. The first episode is kind of nice though.

Can you articulate why it was bad for you?
Also I keep getting annoyed with the season 1 opening credits and feel like they spoilt the show a bit with those if you knew the ending.
