News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

you are both boosted i presume?
My mom is. I sadly am not. Had a very bad side effect that could get worse from it. It was blood platelet related. That said, if I was able to, I'd do it. I'm in no way anti vaccine.

Been feeling a bit better. My sense of taste is improving. Thankfully the worst that I had was a metallic taste in my mouth. Still rather lethargic tho.

Sorry to hear that, @Random_Spock , I hope you are both feeling better soon.

In pandemic news in Ontario today, we found out that they are going to let the mask requirements for public transit and most health-care settings expire this Saturday. I believe that at the provincial level, only the requirements for long-term care facilities and retirement homes will be extended past this weekend.

Thanks! We're feeling a bit better, but it's definitely not something that I'd wish on people.

Had to do a bit of shopping today and people are so selfish. Still out there unmasked and some of these (I hesitate to call them people) pieces of work were coughing. One had a particular croupy cough. Moved as fast as I could away from them. They all think that they're invincible.

Yikes. That's not good.

I definitely don't think I'm invincible. I was in the ER Friday night. I'd gone to urgent care because I've been wheezing a little, and felt like I had a bad stitch in the side that wouldn't go away. So I thought I'd go to urgent care and get an oral steroid. But having contracted COVID meant that there was a possibility that I had a blood clot in my lung. So they sent me to the ER and the ER people determined that my lungs might possibly be inflamed or that I have some wicked muscle strain. I tend to get deep coughs to begin with. And we can add voice loss to my issues. I've been without a voice for 35 days now.

I consider not having something major wrong with the heart and lungs good. And this did help me discover that my voice going down is an early warning system. If there’s something in my respiratory system, my voice goes down first.

Sorry for the double-post, folks. I have been benched for this week by my doctor. My lung tissues are inflamed, as are my sinuses, so I'm on an antihistamine, prednisone and ibuprofen. I have my feline nephew for company and a quiet house to enjoy. But again, COVID is no joke, people.

And, over two weeks later, I’m being put on a stronger dose of prednisone. As I said, COVID is no joke, and if I could physically do it, I’d be kicking the tails of people who keep saying it’s a joke or a hoax…

Thanks, Gary. First dose of prednisone was taken an hour ago. I’ll be on this for a bit more than two weeks. If this fails, I’ll try a stronger dose and maybe get a referral to a pulmonologist. This is the first time my lungs have been in a rage like this…

The lab's open-source program, SARS-Arena, identifies peptides that are part of the virus's nucleocapsid protein to see how they could be targeted. Kavraki said the program was designed from the outset to be highly customizable and easy to use.

"Our work does not analyze the surface spike proteins of SARS-related coronaviruses but a protein deep inside the core of such viruses," Kavraki said. "We define and systematize a complex process of discovering fragments of that protein that can serve as a basis for the development of novel vaccines."

Details about SARS-Arena appear in Frontiers in Immunology.

Another round of increased vaccine eligibility in Ontario this week:
  • Health Canada approved Moderna for children between six months and five years old, which makes it the first COVID vaccine available for that age group here.
  • The Ontario government opened eligibility for a second booster shot to anyone 18 and older.
They also said in their announcement, though, that people who are generally healthy and aren't around crowds of people may want to just wait for now and get it in the fall. They expect our summer wave to peak in the next couple days, and then start declining, with an even larger wave coming this autumn. So now I have to decide whether to get it now, or wait.

TBH, I'm leaning towards just getting it now, since it's been over six months since my first booster, and I thought the effectiveness started to wane after four or five months.

Today I got my third booster shot (the 'bivalent' version) and as I was taking a look at my vaccination card, it hit me:

What's going to happen when we get so many stamps on the back of our cards (from all the various boosters) that we run out of room? I mean, I guess we'll just get a second card, but where do we do that?

I've had 3 shots and one booster I think that is enough for now unless they plan to do this every single year moving forward.

You only get flu shots if you’re very susceptible to the virus or if you’re older. You don’t really need one otherwise

I wouldn't say that's the case here. Ontario introduced a universal flu shot program in 2000 that covers everyone six months old and up. I'm not going to claim that everyone in the province gets them, because that's not true, but it is true that the people who do get them come from all age groups. (Granted that the 65+ group gets them at a higher rate, since they are more at risk.)

It is true that the groups you mention do get an earlier availability window before it opens up to the general population, though.

Yeah, my whole family gets the flu shot every year, ever since the program was introduced. I used to hang around the Gym a lot, and being that I'd encounter a lot of people, it just made sense. It wasn't just about protecting me, but those around me. Every year, all I have to do is make an appointment with the district health unit. I feel healthier and rarely get sick.

Same here! I'm very grateful we have this available to us. Although it obviously doesn't protect you against colds, it's been great to be able to avoid the flu when it's been going around. Unless you were allergic to the vaccine, I don't know why any Ontarian wouldn't take advantage of this opportunity.

It seems to be a popular program, at least around here. Back when our health unit used to run flu clinics in the schools and arenas, they were always lined up out the door whenever I went. (And I hate waiting in line; this is one of the few things I make an exception for! ) One of the best things about the recent-ish change to deliver the flu shots through the pharmacies is no more long waits in line! :D
