COVID really hurt this show a lot. The first four seasons are really good--although some people don't like the message of the first half of season four which deals with the theme of immigration. The second half of season 4 has John Cryer who is fantastic as Luthor. The final two seasons are definitely a drop in quality and a drop in fun, but I still found things to like about the series up until the end.

Knowing that 6 was the end helped me make it to the end of 6.

That was born of two problems: Benoist and the "writers" lacking the sense to know that a character being pleasant & hopeful does not mean they need to act like someone hosting a seminar for "Extra Bright, Strawberry-flavored" toothpaste. No one said Supergirl and/or Kara needed to behave that way in order to give the impression that she's hopeful--or inspires the belief / emotional state in others.

Yeah, that exaggerated portrayal has its live-action roots with the Reeve portrayal, which in turn, was carried over to Hoechlin's performance.

One thing that I've appreciated about Supergirl, especially in the first few seasons, is that it harkens back to the feel of goodnaturedness from the Christopher Reeve movies. I honestly found that refreshing at a time when a lot of Sci-fi and TV shows in general were trending towards making dark dramas. I liked the fact that it had a light and fun feel to it. But later seasons got darker.

    Indeed.
I thought the excellent fourth season did a fine job of dealing with some dark and timely themes without abandoning the show’s fundamental tone and spirit.

Generally yeah, they've done a great job of balancing it. It's when it got to the later seasons, ie 5th and beyond, that it started to get away from what I liked about it.

I've started a Supergirl complete-series rewatch, and tonight was "For the Girl Who Has Everything." Chyler Leigh gives such an intense and emotional performance in this episode. Benoist's praises are universally sung, and rightly so, but Leigh is a powerhouse talent as well.

Yeah I'm really liking Chyler a lot too. Melissa did a bang up job but Chyler is great.
