Spoilers ST Lower Decks - Starships and Technology Season Three Discussion

Ooh, good point. So what does that mean for it being a "Ferengi knockoff"? Does that imply that there's a legitimate, licensed version of the game being played by little warriors all over the Empire, and someone with the lobes for roleplay that didn't involve Vulcan Love Slaves (tm) sensed an opportunity?

I think there would be a legit, licensed version of the game which would imply that a Klingon signed off on it. Maybe the Klingons thought it would be another way to spread their glory to Federation children? :)

So, confirmation that the Excelsior as a class has been in service for (counts fingers) NINETY EIGHT YEARS?! The Hood used the exact same STIII model of the Excelsior, and not the ST6 refit of the same model, so it's also the same variant, barring any LDS artistic liberties.

Oh, if those bulkheads could talk..!

Actually, the Hood was represented by both the STIII NX-2000 Excelsior filming model (NCC-2541) AND the updated version (NCC-42296) of Greg Jein’s Excelsior NCC-2000 he made for VOY’s ‘Flashback’ after it was scanned into a CGI model for the DS9 fleet scenes. Its appearance here is really just for fanwank; logically the ship should have been decommissioned long ago and a new version should have been built.

Is it the same exact model? The Hood in LDS had some kind of large solid block behind the neck and a lot of extra windows on the secondary and primary hull. Seems more like an updated version of the ship IMHO.

That’s all we need: yet a third version of an Excelsior class for the late 24th century.

LDS' USS Hood with extra row of windows on saucer rim, windows on bow of engineering hull, extra box structure or extension on back of neck pylon...

Seems to me that it was fully intended to be the original Hood. I don't see anything suggestive of a larger size (the bottom row on the standard Excelsior saucer rim is empty anyway), so any differences could be chalked up to refits and/or artistic license. Anyway, it's weirdly reassuring to have an oldschool Excelsior still flying around.

Yeah, I’m pretty positive it’s supposed to be the same Hood from TNG.

Damn. The Excelsior does not translate well in that style. They need to retire the Excelsior class. California looks much better beside it.

It's worth noting that the Hood was not a CG model - it was drawn and painted, and in both of the shots we see it in this episode the ship is static or being pulled off screen in the same orientation. We've seen this several times now, like with the two Olympic-class ships we've seen so far, the first Pakled warships in the first season, and the Nova-class ship that picks up Freeman at the end of the previous season. Point being that it was a relatively quick job done for two really quick shots, and I'm happy to see it there at all. SHOULD the Excelsior class have been retired? Probably, but then again it's only a couple years after the Hood's previous "appearance" in the task force sent to help the Enterprise in "Nemesis".

I'd be okay with her being on her last tour of duty after multiple service life extension refits... IRL we've had aircraft carriers lasting longer than their planned service life of 50 years, the B-52 bombers in service now were all built some 60 years ago (and will fly until they're at least 90, when the design itself will be 100 years old!), and so on. If it works, keep it going. :)
