I'm near the end of season 1 and where to begin. Putting a spoiler warning just in case...

I like the series but the leads seem somewhat unlikeable so does any of that change or do they get worse?

Kara / Supes has feels for Jimmy Olsen, Jimmy has a girlfriend in Lucy Lane and I feel at times like I am watching an episode of the Bold & The Beautiful waiting for that not so secret tryst to happen on screen. I feel icky...

Max Lord now not familiar with the comics so what's the deal with this guy? is he a pure villain or sometimes villain?

Cat Grant now there's a piece of work. Not sure if I like her or not. Callista Flockhart is doing a terrific job of chewing up the scenery with her and she's great. So well onto season 2 in a few episodes time.

I liked that whole side plot with the other Kryptonians, so that is good and want to see more of where this is going. The AI that was given to Kara really seems limited for the level of technology that they possess. I was expecting a lot more along the lines of the AI they had in Man Of Steel. I kind of got the impression they borrowed a bit of that look from her pod with the way it crashed to Earth and its look. The story seems kind of the same about Krypton as you really can't change that too much or people won't like that you mess the lore but it's interesting enough. Astra dying was a bit of a surprise, just did not expect that to happen the way it did.

Anyway season 1 so far is a 7/10

I watched the first season but I got bored with it and the other CW DC shows. There was just too much of it.

Too much of what? I hope all the soapy relationship stuff gets toned down a bit that feels a bit too much.

Wow, it is so weird reading about the season one version of the show. Like, I remember all of it, but it's so different from how it ended up. Not necessarily better in every respect, but very different as the seasons go on.

"Too many notes, dear Mozart, too many notes." So much DCU basically that I felt nauseous trying to find the time to watch it all. It was easier just to stop watching altogether.

My wife and I love season 1 and 2. We didn't like season 3 and season 4 wasn't good. We then stopped watching the show

I watched Supergirl during a very bad time in my life and the themes of family, friendship and support were important to me at the time and helped me through those rough months and years.

But yeah..... Like @USS Firefly said, seasons 1 and 2 were awesome. Three was ok and with 4 it started going downhill. I still need to start the last season.

    Maxwell Lord in the comics...

Lord faked an attack on the UN, to reassembled the disbanded Justice League. He takes up a leadership role with the funny 80s/90s League, because he's a seedy billionaire flimflam man with mesmerism powers similar to the Purple Man, and it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I absolutely adored Supergirl for the first two-thirds of its run. The sunny optimism and humor felt right for Superman's world to me. Benoist, in particular, was a revelation and a delight, one of those alchemically perfect bits of casting that will forever define a character for the screen. The show also introduced, over the course of its run, brilliantly successful versions of Superman and Lex Luthor, as played by Tyler Hoechlin and Jon Cryer, respectively.

The first season was terrific, the second and third had their ups and downs but were still hugely enjoyable to me. The fourth season was flat-out great, a season-long political allegory stuffed full to bursting with outstanding characters, actors, and ideas. Unfortunately, the show's quality took a sharp dip for me in its fifth season, and its sixth and final season was, I fear, pretty much a fiasco.

It's still one of my favorite shows, because when it was great, it was awesome, the kind of series that buoys the spirit just to watch it. As Mage accurately described, its themes of family, friendship, and support were powerful, uplifting, and inspiring.

This horrible series' showrunners will soon marginalize and tokenize James Olsen (including plots ripped off from other TV series, as I noted in the other Supergirl review threads), even after he dons a foam suit or armor. The mistreatment of this black male character is as offensive (and predictable) as that which happened to the Luke character on Batwoman.

Oh dear I have that to look forward to hey? When does all that start?
I just don't like the way they are treating Lucy and James and Kara going goo goo eye on him all the time it just feels so wrong.

Poor Win loves Kara but she thinks he is less then dirt, and that's the impression I get.

Olsen's sinking profile begins during season three, as the writers will eventually have him become Guardian, but his arc as the costumed character is centered on character exposition lifted from Judging Amy, while the "romance" between Olsen and Kara will be a blink-and-you-missed-it incident.

If you make it through the entire series, you will see the path Olsen took from the implied second most important character on the series (considering why he's in the city, his stated relationship with Superman, and how he's the first true "insider" to Kara's journey as a costumed character) to someone who will never have a strong character arc of his own. Worst of all, his perspective as a black male professional in media juxtaposed with the realities of his life on the street is barely given a nod (again, that Judging Amy lift), while everyone else will enjoy endless episodes/arc dedicated to their lives.

Serious or not, Mehcad was getting death threats for looking at a little white girl.

I thought William was white until I looked him up on Imdb, and weirdly I thought Brainy was Native American until I found out that he was Indian Indian from Indian, just like William.

You'd almost think the CW was trying to stack the deck with Indians to get some Bollywood money?

I enjoyed Supergirl for what it was on CBS, but it took a huge step backward once it moved to the CW. I don't remember when I gave up on it, but after a while I just stopped caring and let it stack up on the DVR, then I decided to stop recording and deleted them all.

Oh hell I just watched one of the later season 1 episodes where Cat Grant does a not very subtle slam at CW and diverse casting as if they were the cast of a CW show and while that line was supposed to be funny it came across as the opposite to me.

Season 1 felt good for what it was onto season 2 we go. Oh and having watched the show Judging Amy I totally get what @TREK_GOD_1 was saying too. I liked that show.

There's almost nothing on the other side of that season one Flash/Supergirl Crossover.

Next year moving forward, you have fourway or 5way crossovers between Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and (eventually) Batwoman and Black lightning.

So an episode guide might be useful so you don't get lost.

An episode guide would be very beneficial moving forwards, though I'm not sure I will do any of the other DC shows, I got this set as a gift so won't shell out actual dollars of my own to buy any more.

The entire other serieses, don't be ridiculous... And most of the huge crossovers are halfassed and forgettable... So you got nothing to worry about. Stick with Kara, you won't have nothing to worry about. :)

But the the Flash/Supergirl musical two parter, is just darling, because they're both Glee Alumni, and oozing with talent.

Gods, yes, the musical is a delight. Unfortunately, it's actually a Flash episode, and may not be included in the Supergirl set Gingerbread Demon apparently received.
Not at all. The character and Flockhart are both great. Unfortunately, Cat is rarely seen after Season 1.
