Spoilers Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff ‘House Of The Dragons’ ordered to series

I don't care or mind if other people like it. If they do, fine, but groupthink is not persuasive to me. I'll wait for any overall arc or themes to develop and base my decision on whether those make it worthwhile to bother investing my time. Otherwise, it just seems pretty much like a medieval fantasy romp with nudity, sex and extreme violence thrown in.

From what I saw, it looked gratuitously and sensationally nasty with no redemptive qualities. If this season improves, I can wait until it's over to watch it as I did with GOT - but that sucked in the last couple of seasons so badly that I've never wanted to watch it again.

Yeah, just reading an article about it an it sounds like a miserable experience to behold. I'll stick with other more misery inducing things.
 
I can't blame anyone for not wanting to trust this will amount to anything after the dumpster fire that was GoT seasons 7 & 8. But I'm willing to give it another episode. It's easy enough to stop watching.
 
I'll admit I never watched a single episode of GOT. Fantasy stuff beyond Tolkien's world just doesn't grab me.

I watched House of the Dragon solely because of my affection for Matt Smith. Yes. He is VERY good.. But dammit, I can't not see the Doctor under that white wig. LOL.

That said, I did enjoy the first episode and will keep watching.
 
I enjoyed the first episode and am looking forward to ep.2. I do hope we zoom out of Kings Landing and the Targaryens as the show goes on so we can see the state of Westeros at the time.

Also it was nice to see the pre teleported Kings Landing with bays and hills again :guffaw:

I wouldn't put it as having no redemptive qualities - no one can make that judgement after a single episode. GoT didn't exactly explode either after the first episode, that built up slowly through the first season and mainly made people notice when fan favorite Eddard Stark got beheaded, breaking with general convention that fan favorites have invulnerable plot armor ( that came only into effect in the late season for a few main characters).

So let's give them at least this season to establish the plot, characters and events and then see if it warrants continued viewing.

‘House of the Dragon’ Premiere Draws Nearly 10 Million Viewers, Biggest HBO Series Premiere Ever

Westeros came back to HBO last night with the series premiere of “House of the Dragon” — and brought the masses along with it.

“House of the Dragon” drew in 9.99 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max after premiering with one episode on Sunday, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. This viewership tally includes linear airings, as well as HBO Max streams during premiere night.

HBO says “House of the Dragon” drew the largest audience in the pay TV channel’s history, including content that debuted before the streaming era, as well as HBO shows that have since premiered on defunct digital platforms HBO Now and HBO Go, as well as their successor HBO Max.

2.17 million watched the show at its premiere time on the traditional HBO channel, which is insanely high these days. WW got 0.39 million for its premiere.

In fantasy, medieval life is depicted as all sexual violence and squalor. It's not that simple

Whenever a fantasy story treads too far into gruesome violence or plain old human exploitation, storytellers like to trot out four little words:
"But it's historically accurate."
That was the explanation the creators of the "Game of Thrones" prequel "House of the Dragon" gave after the premiere served up a smorgasbord of gore, including an agonizing forced birth scene in which a woman is sliced through like a turkey in hopes of saving her baby at the expense of her own life. (Both die.)
