lol did not see that final scene coming
Liked the finale, below just initial thoughts.
It's gonna be a long wait (1 year plus probably as season 4 production just has started I think)

    Yay's
    • Kelly and Baby live! - thanks in part to Aleida's "the Martian" rescue plan after Margo set her straight
    • Molly saving Ed's ass, as well as many NASA workers after the bombing, RIP HERO If I saw that right in the newspaper.
    • Ed lives (he is the first to land 2 times on Mars)
    • Korean gets rescued, video calls wife, smiles
    • Sergei/Family safe
    • the "Martian" Family* lives - So many Whatney's - hope they have enough potatoes ;) - looking forward to seeing them hopefully again, especially the russian commander and doctor, Dani and Tyler.
    • Ellen still POTUS, lives and visits Pam :adore:

    Nay's
    • *unfortunately Danny still lives and the other misguided brother Jimmy too. How many deaths have they caused?!

    Questions/Thoughts
    • Kelly's baby isn't suited for life in earth gravity, thus they choose to live in space/on Mars (also keeps the actress on the show)
    • Were the Russians the actual masterminds that used the terrorists (at great cost to many) to get Margo? or was that just super convenient timing - how she plays piano after leaving the control room, then isn't around when boom just minutes after.
    • Dev still will get kicked out at Helios, but how bad is NASA doing? any chance they could "merge".
    • Can Ellen protect NASA or Space Exploration somehow as POTUS or with new job head of NASA/Helios/Merger?

    Your thing in Spoiler
was a coincidence, but a convenient one for her to escape. A lot of Russian space program employees were at NASA too, no reason to kill them all just to save Margo.

I don't think Jimmy is actually culpable for anything. It's possible lifting the ID card somehow helped the gang get their fake press credentials (though I think they might've just slipped in with the legitimate media in all the confusion), but it seems like his entire role in their plot was facilitating them hijacking NASA TV to broadcast their manifesto, which ended up being surplus to requirements, to put it mildly.

Danny going into space-exile in lieu of them having a space-jail is pretty remarkable, as is the implication that Dani and Ed didn't tell him what was going on, and just took him out for an hours-long drive in the rover. That must have been uncomfortable as he waited to find out what they were planning to do with him. And I just remembered, they did mark where they buried the Korean astronaut's pistol, which may or may not come into play.

After last week's episode, the NASA Vending Machine podcast observed that, it turns out, Dev isn't Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos, he's Steve Jobs, which was really confirmed with his reaction to being forced out in favor of a CEO he himself recruited was to try to poach everyone he could for his "NeXT" company, and his dawning horror that the people who weren't already rich were partially in it for the money. Did anyone else catch the woman in the crowd of employees with the Vulcan eyebrows? Was that a thing in the '90s?

I wonder if the US political scene next season will be radically different. Ellen was counting on the support of the Democrats to protect her from a witch-hunt impeachment by her own party, and was pretty irritated by the GOP blowing up her barely-a-sex-scandal rather than closing ranks around her. So much for "Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line." Anyway, while it's happened recently with representatives and senators, a sitting President either leaving her party or even switching to the opposing major party is the kind to thing that could shake up the two-party system in a way we haven't seen in quite a while in the US. Maybe next season a dashing young Barack Obama will be the Democrat running against Libertarian Ron Paul in 2004.

Which reminds me, we did hear a mention of "Secretary Bush," who based on context, would probably be State, but could be Defense. Either way, it looks like he wasn't completely shut out of national politics by not becoming Vice President.

The disgruntled former oil, coal, and so on workers,
    the bombing
, the conspiracies, all seems to be setting up a bleak 00s, whereas in our 90s we had Libertarians fighting against the 'Fed'/'man' and leading to the racists bombing OKC, some economic shakeup due to NAFTA, now we're seeing this sort of anti-space, anti-trust in the gov business take off especially due to the outing and the jockeying at the WH, the fusion tech basically shaking up industries for millions who are disgruntled and a US that seems to be doing the same thing in the 90s where they pledged funds to reeducate and retrain workers after NAFTA but...kinda didn't.
That shot of the HSC is pure OK bombing.
    .

Apparently AIDs was still ignored and neglected in this timeline, too? Sheesh.

About TIME the PMU and IPS is mentioned. Those would had come in handy a few times before.

As someone who has experienced more than his fare share of car bombings and IED's, there would not be much of Karen left from the distance she was at.

Nice that they flipped the idea of Danny sacrificing himself. Space still has not found a way to break Ed Baldwin it seems.

overall a pretty disappointing season all because of the stevens bullshit and the worst thing is that since they let these two uninteresting character live they'll probably double down on that stuff in season 4 i really hope i'm wrong and they move away from these two dickhead

Yeah.. I have to unfortunately agree. The first couple of episodes were really pretty good, as were the last two, but the minutia in the middle really bogged everything down for me this season. I tuned out the Stevens drama to the point that I still don't honestly get the whole conspiracy thing. But that's fine. Gordo and Tracy would be so disappointed and ashamed with how their kids have (not) grown.

That being said, I'm all aboard for what the next season may bring!

I was a little confused about where Ellen ended up. She's still President, right? I guess that means she survived impeachment?

I pretty much expected Ed to die this year just from a narrative and time stand-point. He's in his mid to late 60s at this point, another decade-ish time jump puts him in his 70s. I thought there was going to be some kind of sacrifice or hero send-off for him this year. Everything seemed to be building to that and then they flipped the script so I give them credit for that misdirect. Karen died and not Ed.

The shot of Ed walking away from the smoking lander module on Mars was a helluva hero walk though.

I'm not sure you can infer much from the ending since there's no real time-frame as to whether an impeachment vote and Senate hearing happened (or happened yet). Technically one could assume that since she has SECRET SERVICE protection she is either A)Still President or B)Resigned as President. Because if a President is impeached and convicted in the Senate it removes the rights afforded to ex-Presidents such as Secret Service protection and what not.

The newspaper shows 1995 (I couldn't tell the month the way it was folded)... so she would still be in office. The ending time-jump doesn't happen until after Ellen's scenes so they took place before that newspaper delivery showing it as still 1995.

The episode title "Stranger in a Strange Land", of course, has lots of SF resonance but might well, in this context, have referred to that final scene.

Time for some escapist sci fi, where it’s just something minor like a NASA director going down for sharing nuclear info and not something crazy like a President or something….:brickwall:

Wait... What?? Did I blink and miss a couple of things?

Molly was fine after the explosion, or at least looked fine. Margo was at her piano and that part of her office was blown away. I mean, I guess Molly could have had internal injuries that she later succumbed to. And I guess Margo could have sneaked out the back door just before explosion... Really, I'd just like a little exposition. Maybe they ran out of time?

    Wow.

    So much to unpack.

    I can't even begin to—Wow.

This was For All Mankind at its finest, even better than last week's episode. Including even, much to my shock, the Danny and Jimmy plotlines.

I'm in full awe of the sheer audacity of exploration and survival in the face of an indifferent universe. Well, that and brainwashed conspiracy theories.

I figured going into this season we would be shedding cast members, but going into this episode, I didn't think people would be dying left and right before the conclusion. Except Ed, that stubborn old ass. He's going to live to a fucking ripe old age just out of pure spite.

I was so thrilled to see Molly return in this episode and even more thrilled that she wasn't limited to just that one awkward conversation with Karen. She got a hero's welcome home...and then died a hero. The blind leading the injured out of danger...and headed right back in without a moment's hesitation. She wouldn't have it any other way, our Molly. :wah:

Even Karen had a hero's moment, saving Jimmy from his own stupidity and despair. Who knows what else the conspiracy nutjobs had intended to do before her intervention (still not clear about the component Jimmy was coaxed to install), even if it was just interrupting NASA's mission to spout their manifesto nonsense (I guess that was the point of that component).

Danny finally owned up to his gravest mistake (justice for Nick!) and he's been exiled to the North Korea capsule for the duration of the Happy Valley's prolonged stay on Mars. Good riddance. He'll only live long enough to fess up about Karen and Ed will finally end him.

As for the North Korean astronaut, I find Lee's survival a bit dubious during his long, confined stay. How was he able to make that long journey with such a small capsule? How does he have nearly enough supplies (food, water, air, research...) for that period of time, especially in the form of canned goods (which are far heavier than the standard plastic alternatives)? What was the intended mission? No return flight could've been possible so was it a presumed one-way ticket? Was Lee brainwashed by North Korea propaganda into thinking that was a worthy mission for his glorious nation? Too many questions and not nearly enough plausible answers. But I'm willing to forgive all of that for the future storytelling potential his presence provides. That and it allowed him to be the actual, albeit stealth, first man on Mars! Laugh it up, Dani and Grigory!

But at least we had one genuinely happy ending: Thanks to the combined efforts of everyone, Kelly was successfully launched to Phoenix where she was able to successfully give birth to a healthy baby (Ed Jr....or Edwina? Or Alexei or Alexis?). I'm very curious to see how that child grows up.

And then there's Margo. For the briefest of moments, it felt like there was peace and understanding between Aleida and Margo and I had hopes for that...future talk, in whatever form it would take (at least with a lot of hurt and justified anger). Then the bombing happened and Margo was presumed dead. Aleida even seemed to genuinely grieve over Margo's loss despite her mixed, conflicted feelings.

    But.

Even after Lenara hinted at the idea of defection, I never thought Margo would do it. I didn't think she even had a chance to do it. But somehow, she escaped the jaws of death to the Red Square. Her survival portends she will return in some form. I suspect she'll be working directly with Roscosmos which will help them get right back into the Space Race, in whatever form that will take. And at some point, Aleida will become suspicious again...and slowly begin to realize her mentor is still alive.

I've had my issues with this season, mostly in the form of Danny and Jimmy, which surprisingly worked in the end for the most part, even if there were undoubtedly better ways to achieve those desired outcomes than what we actually got.

But these last two episodes really were truly incredible and has reignited my excitement for season four. I cannot wait to the future of Happy Valley (presumably a big growth jump a la Jamestown), the integration of Lee with the other three combined missions, the strange dynamics of the presumed Aleida/Margo rivalry, and the childhood of Kelly's baby.

Baldwin junior developed on Mars, only was delivered in 1G on Pheonix.

Basically I thought some kind of issue like that would be another reason to keep Kelly in Space aside from her obvious talents for potentially/eventually discovering extra terrestrial life.

the cast leans heavy on the older characters, most of which won't make the initially planned duration of 7 seasons / decades to get us to present day, let alone beyond.
They can and probably will introduce new characters, but it makes little sense to write out "core" young ones.

    younger core characters
    Aleida Rosales
    Kelly Baldwin
    Will Tyler
the Stevens death bro's (Danny and Jimmy)

    Middle
    Helios Dev
    Astronaut Danielle
    NASA/Helios Bill (status unknown)
Astronaut Piscotty (Pathfinder pilot - status?)
    Pam
    POTUS/Astronaut Ellen

    Older
    Helios/Astronaut Ed
    NASA-Sovjet Margo*
    Astronaut Molly
    Helios Karen
    Astronaut Gordo
    Astronaut Tracy

    Sovjet-Sergej in the US*
    Cosmonaut Grigory (Mission Commander)
    Cosmonaut Doctor Dimitri
    Koreanaut Lee

+ the recurring other Helionauts I always forget their names though.

    * possibly in some way or form

Heh, I didn't even think of The Martian connection in that moment. But I did think of that film during Lee's "first person to be alone on an entire planet" montage.

I thought about that, too. I suspect that they were just homegrown nutjobs, shades of Timmy McVeigh and all that. I also wonder if the FBI/whomever will accuse the Soviets of the bombing if and when Margo's defection comes out.

My immediate thought upon seeing the level of damage Johnson Space Center was that there's a power vacuum, one that Helios can immediately fill in. But the question remains what for will that take. I imagine it'll remain independent from the government but I suspect they'll be close partners with NASA because they need each other now. Especially if Ellen becomes the new CEO.

I think it's a double reference. Margo and Lee (the North Korean astronaut).

Molly probably died of internal injuries as you said. Undoubtedly she inhaled all kinds of shit which wouldn't be good for someone who is already immunocompromised thanks to her radiation intake. Between the two, she lived long enough to save people and then die.

As for Margo, I suspect she was whisked away prior to the bombing and we didn't see it for the purpose of the shocking reveal (and to mourn temporarily with Aleida). I'm fine with that narrative.

Grigory is his name. I kept forgetting it, too, but I'm able to look it up easily since I know he's played by Lev Gorn.

You forgot to include Lee Jung-Gil (the North Korean astronaut). Undoubtedly he'll play a key role next season.
