So first, very important..... THIS IS NOT MADE BY ME!!!

I just stumbled over it on YouTube.

Second, even though not as good as the TNG bluray stuff, if a version of this was available for streaming I'd be very happy.

Still not there, IMO. The eyes continue to be a problem for AI upscalers, and this one seems to have obliterated too much detail overall. Everything is way too smoothed.

It does show promise though. With advances in AI and crucially, human input and oversight in some of the decision making, the results obtained in the next few years could be pretty good.

I'm not a videophile at all. I don't see the difference...I'm sure I'm wrong or something.

Color pops a bit more, but the detail still isn't there.

But considering this is AI upscaling and there is almost zero chance of the studios doing a professional project like they did with TNG, I still would be ok with this.

That's cool, we all have different tastes. I personally find this to be an eyesore and in the absence of a proper ground-up remaster, I would be much happier with new masters struck from the master tapes. The ones we have now don't just have the drawbacks of being finished on tape, but also the drawbacks of having been transferred to digital twenty years ago.

Everyone had their thing. I don't see enough of the difference to make it preferred over current format.

I'd rather watch honest SD than false HD.

What I think is important to note is....

People in this topic care about this stuff. Literally 98% of viewers don't, really. Everytime I have a friend over and we watch something and I'm fussy about shit like this they look at me as if I'm a madman.

And honestly, I am a madman, so there you go

I just wish I could see it the same way. SD and HD has been a long discussion amongst my video editing major friends. And my eyes must be very bad (and they are) because I don't see the difference.

So, while I may be mad in a different sense, I'm mader still because I wish I understood it.

You're better off that way. Way less expense on new equipment and media.

If you give most folks a Big Mac and a top-tier steakhouse burger, they're going to tell the difference.

That doesn't mean most people don't care, it just means you need more discriminating friends. ;)

Jokes aside, I've witnessed much the same. I can't comprehend people who watch 4x3 stuff stretched out to fill a 16x9 screen. Do they not see, or not care? Either one is baffling.

I'm not sure this IS the difference between a big mac and a steakhouse burger though. I'd certainly mind 4:3 stretched out to 16:9, or cropped, or with bits of lighting gear in the edges of the frames. I'd mind them editing what objects are in the picture, as done to TOS. On the whole, I'm happy with the DVDs and don't want to give busybody editors the chance to improve what was filmed too much.

Big Mac = imperfect artificial intelligence upscaling, with all the attendant limitations.
Steakhouse burger = original source - film? - properly edited and with recreated computer-generated imagery (e.g., TNG on Blu-Ray).

I'm 40, I forgot how making friends works.

But yes, I never understood that either. I'm not as picky as true videophiles would be, so this upscaling.... I can definitely see it's not as good as the TNG remasters. But for me it's nicer than watching the current versions on Netflix on a 49" UHD screen. I have all the so called enhancements turned off so that's something atleast.

Because a lot more people care about food and can tell the difference. But, will ALL of them care?
Besides, again, even the people that can tell the difference won't care. My dad for example... if the digital channel is unavailable and all he has at the moment is the old analog coming in on his tv, he won't care. He can tell, just doesn't care.

Just realized that's a moot point since the analog signals stopped about a year ago.... but you get my point.

That was a metaphor and not literally concerning food. My point is that - on the whole - people will notice qualitative differences and maybe even eventually care for those distinctions. Still, regardless of how people truly feel, I vigorously prefer that we elevate the lowest common denominator by adhering to higher standards instead of giving them the bare minimum and leaving it at that.
