I think it could be argued that this is the best relatively low-key episode of the series.

That sort of back and forth insults might work on sitcoms or sketch comedy shows, but it wasn't a highlight for B5. It's especially classy coming from someone who was making money writing Star Trek novels at the time. I'm glad DS9 never responded, if they ever even knew it happened.

Ivanova's line in 'Voices of Authority' - "You're about to go where...everyone has gone before" - was funnier, anyway.

    And much less insulting.

Yeah, that one sounds like a line an actual human being would say. The franchise line didn't. Not that writing believable, natural dialogue was ever one of either PAD's or JMS's strong points.

I really don't think Peter David's line there was "insulting." It was clearly playful ribbing, not meant in earnest.

It would have been less 'on the nose' if they'd left out the word 'deep'.

But in the interest of full disclosure, I take everything in earnest.

Keep also in mind that Peter David, at the time, wrote for both DC and Marvel Comics, and putting playful slights at the other was a bit of a tradition at the time (something JMS also partook in once he started writing for them). My guess is David wanted to introduce a similar thing to B5 and Trek.

For those who've voiced concern about the CW, JMS had this to say last night (in answer to an article claiming that the reboot would be slanted toward the younger audience:

B5 Books have announced that the 'What the Hell Happened?' Crusade series will finally be continuing! Volumes 2 & 3 are currently in the works.

It's funny. I had been hoping that with the CW being sold that this would go to HBO Max where it would be free of network restrictions and strict episode lengths. But I guess that won't be happening.

With the future of MAX in peril, I'd rather have a B5 reboot on CW.

With the CW no longer part of WB will they still have the rights to do a reboot?

I think that depends on whether the CW continues to exist, and whether the B5 fan who commissioned this reboot will still have a job there.

Warners still has 12% stake in. And will provide series so hope isn't dead yet. That President if he was the torch bearer so as long as he's in charge there's a good shot of it going forward.

Mark Pedowitz, the guy who gave the go ahead, was always a big supporter of SUPERNATURAL. I am biased, but I am certain if he is still CW president, it WILL happen. He has proven his word in the past.

I agree, but "if he is still CW president" is far from a certain thing right now. I'm not confident the CW will even still exist in a year.

It seems like joint ventures probably won't last given every media company wants all their own stuff on their own streaming platform lately. It would be ironic if ParamountCBSViacom bought out WarnerDiscoveryHBOBros stake and after all this time, B5 ended up owned by the same company as Star Trek.

Seems like they are both probably going to sell it to a third party though, hell if Netflix or Amazon buys it, maybe there's hope yet for the franchise!

If the deal to sell The CW to Nextstar has happened and just hasn't been announced, I don't see that company paying for the network and its assets just to dissolve it.

The CW might become a purely Syndicated channel under Nextstar, but I don't see it ceasing to exist at all.
