I've never understood why TMP has had so many remasters when DS9 hasn't had one, not counting the amazing work done by Ira Behr's DS9 documentary team. Is TMP that popular? Did it undergo a reappraisal, like DS9?

Every time I tried streaming, they look like crap. Especially regarding jagged edges, more so than for videotaped sitcoms of the same era (1990s). And, you guessed it, the modern techniques to upscale are still very limited. Especially if one is viewing on a screen larger than a 6" smartphone.

TMP is that popular, and the more viewers take a second look at the film, they're seeing nuances which didn't resonate before. I don't hear much of anything about DS9 besides this forum, I wouldn't mind seeing a facelift for the first 3 seasons but me thinks many really want the work to be done with seasons that count which was the WAR seasons of 4 thru 7.

I'd want all of DS9 remastered.

I've watched on a 65" 4K TV with HDR and didn't have any real issues with jagged edges.

I’m confused about this poll. Why are we voting for which one we want remastered more, when the OP already makes it clear that one has already been remastered and one hasn’t?

Which streaming service are you using?

I'd read another on TrekBBS noting issues with streaming quality. Maybe Amazon had poor copies. It's a moot point, Amazon Prime doesn't do Trek anymore.

You did say "real issues", which suggests you noticed something but it's not pronounced enough for you to be concerned with, which is understandable.

The last time I watched the shows were when they were on Netflix here in the US.

Neither the thread title nor the original post makes clear what the question is. I'm also confused...

Because it's very expensive to do a proper restoration for DS9. Despite being filmed, the episodes were all edited on videotape and as result, all the VFX were done on standard definition. Basically, the masters are what we see now. The only way to proper restore it in HD, it's to return to the film elememts, clean and scan them, afterwards edit the episodes scene by scene and re-add all the VFX, meaning that they have to re-do all the post production process from scratch. It's the same thing they did with TNG, except that TNG didn't have the CGI effects that DS9 had, which is another problem entirely. It's a laborious and extensive project, unfortunately.

TMP it's a two hour movie and with a master readily available for Paramount. But then again, it took them years for them to re-release the Director's Cut in HD simply because it had new CGI effects that were also done in standard definition.

I think that's about it, I'm not sure if I'm one hundred percent correct though.

Because the poster doesn't feel TMP should've gotten a full Hi def restoration but instead the HIGHLY VOCAL cult following from TNG spin-off should.

Not precisely. TNG used more film up until the final cut.
The composites were done on tape onto the otherwise finished 35mm master.
For TNG, they had to rescan the original optical effects (some they redid entirely digitally) and recomp everything to a new master but 90% of the editing was already done on film.
The best we can hope for a DS9 remaster is a high quality scan of the betamax master and perhaps upscaling. And despite being relatively cheap, it still would cost Paramount money to do all that - and with the decline of DVD and bluray sales I can't see how they think it would be profitable.

Thanks for correcting me, I didn't know the final cut were already on film. The opticals and CGI effects are really the problem. I think it's really stupid for Paramount not do anything, even Babylon 5 got a HD release. I was watching on HBO Max and it looks great, but they didn't remade any effects, they just upscaled the VFX shots and you can notice a very clear dip in quality when there's any special effects on the scene. I think Paramount could at least try this way with DS9, I mean, it's better than nothing.
