Good episode, but what ruined it for me was Kirk. I was totally disappointed with the Kirk casting. I mean looks and demeanour bear no resemblance to Kirk from the original series. Even the Kirk from the new Star Trek movies was better than this Kirk. Most importantly color of the hair is all wrong. What the heck!

Sure so the next Hulk movie will be portrayed by a blue skinny guy, but it will be totally fine because he's called Hulk and its not a real documentary anyway.
Kirk looked like Kirk to me, he was just played by a different actor. It doesn’t break the show that they didn’t clone Shatner to play him. A slightly different shade of hair is hardly comparable to a blue Hulk, don’t be ridiculous.

Yeah and over the course of the MCU, Bruce Banner has been played by three guys who look nothing alike. The Hulk's look has also been modified.

Strange New Worlds is really revealing a split in the way people think about Star Trek and maybe all live-action fiction. Some viewers don't even think twice about different visuals and performances, because it's just television, other viewers can't reconcile two conflicting depictions of the same reality, because it's all the same story.

I'm sure most people are somewhere in between though, just closer to one side or the other.

I hate to say it, but the problem is with the latter.

I just finished watching and thought the episode was excellent. The best of the season. Actually it’s the greatest hour of new Star Trek I’ve seen in nearly 20 years.

Sure it had some warts — like how sloppy the monster maroon was on Pike — but overall I was very very happy with this installment.

And I love how it reminds me of another favorite: Diane Carey’s Ship of the Line novel — a story that similarly revisits Balance of Terror to juxtapose Kirk’s tactical ability and brash style against a more diplomatic approach.

Paul Wesley's Kirk reminds me of Stephen Collins as Wil Decker. He could grow into the role, this was an alternate timeline version as well. My main issue with Wesley I think is his build, and maybe it is just him next to Mount, but he looks tiny. He also has a very different torso shape than Shatner, who was always barrel-chested even at his thinnest.
