Nah Spock was going to turn their sun into a black hole so the Romulans were dead either way. :rommie:
I thought he was going to make a black hole to absorb the nova so they would be saved.

That’s how you do an opening cliffhanger for ST nerds. I don’t know that I gasped when I saw the maroon, but I might as well have.

I loved how talky and thoughtful this was. They really were tempting fate messing with a classic like BoT, but it worked for me because they continued and built on BoT’s contemplative themes. Didn’t think the Romulan commander was a patch on Mark Lenard, but who could be? He reminded me more of Jarok from TNG’s “The Defector.” Loved the praetor.

The fellow playing Kirk underscored how much Shatner brought to the part just by being Shatner.

I continue to dislike the Romulan ridges. It was especially distracting here, both thematically and visually. Maybe it’s the HD, but the foreheads didn’t look natural.

That said, this show has been a visual feast. There were times in this episode when I felt like I was seeing stuff from TOS for the first time.

They never explained why Ortegas’ position was switched, did they? I guess that was done to subtly signal that this future was off-kilter, but I’d be curious to hear the thought process.

How I will miss this show.

SPOCK PRIME: (voice-over) Using red matter, I would create a black hole, which would absorb the exploding star.

I assume after Picard this means absorbing the Romulan star. But it's possible Spock had some other technobabble solution in mind.

Commander Hansen's race was changed also, and in dialogue also as his last name is established as Al-Salah, a Middle Eastern name. But Hansen's appearance in TOS was so brief that I'm fine with it.

Seems strange he'd be commanding Outpost 4 months after his son died in TOS like nothing happened though, as it's established now.
It's likely that Benjamin Sisko was given a new assignment not long after his wife died at Wolf 359.

I don't think captains get to decide these things. Face it: there was no refit. This is a retcon.
We don't know that, we only know that based on Pikes view of the future it didn't happen.

And it's only a retcon, if one wishes it to be.

I prefer to think of it as having an altered appearance in Tech due to the occurrences that happened during "First Contact" & the Temporal Cold War of "ENTERPRISE."

But, what ever floats yer boat.

Hansen's established as commanding Outpost 4 from 2259 to 2266. We know now his son doesn't make it alive from the delta radiation accident. He's still there in Balance of Terror (albeit with a caucasian actor but presumably it's the same character). He wasn't reassigned.

It wasn’t the Romulus star initially. It was some other star (later called Hobus in other media) that caused a massive nova that it was going to destroy the Romulus system as well

Massive spoilers for Picard season 2 finale
Isn't protecting the timeline the Temporal Integrity Commission's job, or Department of Temporal Investigations, or even Wesley Crusher's? Now the monks of Boreth are in on it too?

Am I the only one thinking Una is severely underused during the whole season of SNW?
I've been saying it from the start. They gave her a backstory and all and did nothing with it until the very end of the last episode.

I still say, despite liking all the characters, that there are too many of them for this format, especially given the number of episodes per season.

What floats my boat now is to stop spending time and energy trying to explain real world decisions with in-universe fan-wank.

Then you have completely lost a large part of what being a fan of Trek has been about since its inception.
And you are much the poorer for it.

Speaking of Una: Who snitched her out?

I got the strong impression that Pike was going to omit any mention of her being an Illyrian in his log. And Una deleted her personal log entry referencing it. How did Starfleet find out?

Was it M'Benga? Chapel? Uhura? La'an?

I'm thinking M'Benga inadvertently let it slip in his report on the development of an antidote for the light virus.

It's quite possible that one of Una's routine service physicals finally detected her DNA changes and Star Fleet Medical caught wind of it.
It may not have been anyone in particular who pointed it out.

A.W.E.S.O.M.E.! I loved every minute of that episode, from Admiral Pike's monster maroon to the reuse of the TOS music cues from Balance of Terror. Scotty was a great addition as well, even if we didn't see him. The prime universe canon of the USS Kelvin and First Officer George Kirk is reinforced. The cliffhanger was the icing on the cake. The only thing that would have made it better is if they gave another TOS nod by cast James Frain as the Romulan Commander.

The only distraction was that instead of Kirk, I could only see Jim Carrey. Now you will too.

Una crushing on Pike has been canon for over 50 years since Cage/Menagerie. Despite Batel just "doing her job" I think we can assume that Batel and Pike are officially over now, explaining why she's nowhere to be seen in Menagerie. As for Una, if Pike somehow gets her out of jail, I don't think she'll ever forget that. And she won't ever stop trying to find a cure for Pike in turn, even after he retires to Talos IV. I think Pike's story is no longer going to end at Talos IV now.
