No it is not cringe as a stand alone and when you ignore TOS but when you bring in TOS, yeah it is cringe and the whole point of prequels is to make you think of the original series more because that is what it is building up too.

This is the same Spock who will tell her in 10 years that..... your face is wet and not get that she is crying.

I just dont see how that is possible now watching SNW that Spock will say that to her. Also act sometimes quite rude to her, although we know that is just how Vulcans can be. The dynamic of chock in SNW is making that had to believe that he does not know tears and from Chapel. That is just all I am saying.
Treat it like a soft reboot like everyone else.

Someone should replace all the Gorn sound effects with Xenomorph ones. That would be good. :)

BTW, did La'an not find out Hemmer had gotten a Gorn facial until the very end? I don't recall if she was in sickbay when he and Uhura came in, or if she was off looking for the kid by then. It seems like the whole impregnation thing would be something she would want to mention.
He told her that it 'burns', so the assumption is that she didn't know that's how they reproduce.

The episode wasn't bad, but it started off as Alien -- and added Newt from Aliens -- then they turned the Gorn into the demodogs from Stranger Things (complete with similar sound effects), went back to Alien, and then they killed off Hemmer for a sad ending. Really schizophrenic in the end. I think this episode needed to go the Orville route And be longer than an hour. We needed extra screen time for the emotional beats to actually land at the end. I want to give it a 7, But I'm going to give it a 6.5.

I'm not sure why they went this route with Hemmer. His biggest role up to this point was last week's episode that ends with him forgetting everything that happened. So all he really does the entire season is give Uhura some encouragement and then die.

I hope we see Buckley's species again. That was a really cool prosthetic.

And I disagree. That's all I am saying.

Because this is the same Spock who strove harder and harder towards the Vulcan way, meaning there is a dramatic shift (one I would expect from the Cage going forward) in his character that will change that dynamic.

Kirk in TOS was a swashbuckling cowboy who'd violate the Prime Directive just to have a cool story to tell in a senior staff meeting. By TWOK he was a tired, emotionally unfulfilled desk Admiral who was only in his early fifties but felt tired and worn out and had to lose his best friend and come close to losing his ship to feel young again.

Yes, Spock can be like this in 2259 and another way in 2266 and 2267. Time changes people both in real life and fiction.
Exactly.

Considering her brother was a victim I find that very hard to believe.
Likewise, plus she says in earlier eps that she saw everyone else on her colony ship used for food or egg sacks, so she has to know about that side of their life cycle. It just came back to me because I was thinking about La'an's trauma reactions and how intense she was with Newt at first, berating her for not putting forth more information. So it seemed weird that she herself wouldn't say something if she'd been informed of Hemmer's condition.

There better be a good reason they killed off their one disabled character.

Essentially the only other current genre show that focuses on blind people is See, and that's about to enter its final season.

Kurtzman's total writing credits across modern Trek:

Discovery Season 1 - Co-story credit with Fuller on The Vulcan Hello
Discovery Season 2 - Co-writing credit with Michelle Paradise and Jenny Lumet on Such Sweet Sorrow 1/2
Discovery Season 3 - Co-writing credit with Michelle Paradise and Jenny Lumet on That Hope is You Part 1 and Far From Home.
Discovery Season 4 - Co-writing credit with Michelle Paradise and Jenny Lumet on Kobyashi Maru.
Picard Season 1 - Co-story credit with Goldsman, Chabon, Beyer, and James Duff on Rememberance
Strange New Worlds Season 1 - Co story credit with Goldsman and Jenny Lumet on Strange New Worlds
Short Treks - Co-writing credit with Jenny Lumet on Runaway, Co-writing credit with Jenny Lumet and Beyer on Children of Mars

What conclusions can we draw from this?
  • Kurtzman never writes for Trek alone. He always writes with Jenny Lumet, and sometimes with another partner.
  • In several cases he has "story credits" - which basically means he helped construct the initial plot scenario and left it to someone else to actually script it.
  • With the exception of Such Sweet Sorrow, all of his credits for full episodes are for season (or show) premiers. Basically he likes to help set up the initial scenarios for shows and then walk away and let someone else implement it. Which is exactly what you'd expect from a producer - it's exactly what Berman did with DS9 and VOY.
  • Even Such Sweet Sorrow could be seen as being DIS Season 3 setup, given they have to go to the future. Much like Children of Mars was actually just setup for PIC Season 1.
That there's not an original bone in the man's body? :p

Gorn Hegemon: First things first, Lieutenant. ...Kill Captain Pike.

Hemmer: Sir, that it is difficult. I ...try to obey, but...

Hegemon: Kill him.

Hemmer: I...

Hegemon: Kill him, Hemmer, now!

(Hemmer vaporizes himself. La'an's brother collapses and a Gorn hatchling crawls out of his ear)
By Alex Kurtzman and Nicholas Meyer.

Okay...that's enough hate from me. I look forward to the rewatch and will try to do so with an open mind.

Let me chime in here as someone who's disabled (cerebral palsy, wheelchair user). I don't care about this. I realize there are people that do... But honestly, I don't care one bit about representation on TV and seeing myself on TV and movies and media and all that crap. What I care about is a good character and a good story. That's my opinion. And yes, I'm aware that in this climate especially, there are many that disagree.

I liked Hemmer... What little we saw of him. So my biggest beef isn't that they killed off their disabled character. I don't live on Twitter so I'm not going to get mad about that. But I am peeved that we didn't see much of him and now he is apparently gone. Maybe that's good in the long run, make it so you will actually miss the character. I don't know. But he seemed to die in order to uplift Uhura, which is a writing technique that is getting more traction these days. Uhura is an established character, so on one hand I get it. But on the other hand, I think Hemmer deserved to be fleshed out more. Maybe the actor signed on for a few episodes because he didn't want the prosthetics? I don't know. But yeah, this is a long-winded way of saying I don't care that they killed off their disabled character... I care that they killed off a likable and interesting character.

I also realised this episode stole from star trek 2009 and not just aliens with some character moments. Chapel comforts spock almost the exact same way uhura comforts spock in the turbo lift scene, she even has both hands on her face as uhura did, except Quinto is not the Spock as Peck is meant to be, (I dont mean this as a disrespect to Quinto) but he is an alternate Spock and that is an alternate reality with no canon breaking rules.

Also in this episode Spock enrage at Sam kirk, is almost the same as Kelvin Spock raging at Jim Krik for insulting him in star trek 2009.

So this episode is a real mix of Aliens and some star trek 2009. Not surprised a Kurtzman tv trek show will do this because he is pretty limited in ideas.

This is the same tired argument as in Obi-Wan Kenobi. God forbid characters change over time. (Not the post above, but the whole discussion on how it’s “not matching canon.”)

I dont think it is about characters changing, I think it is about characters becoming their selves we know. For instance the harry potter universe, if you watch secrets of Dumbledore, a prequel movie and then deathly hallows 1 and 2, it adds up and fit well to the story of Dumbledore and Grindleward.

SNW at this point is not about changing it is about trying to' 'correct'' some of the issues the writers feels the show had to the point they contradict themselves when they say this is mean to be a direct canon. this has always been the same issues in Discovery, reason the show has far more women then men characters and why Pike in SNW does not have the authority appeal of Picard and Pike in TOS Cage and why Michael Burnham has to be the one sole saviour of the universe. All done to make up for the Alpha males of Picard, Spock, Kirk. However they forget you also need good writing. Discovery lacks that.

Prequels are meant to explain some things that are left. NU trek wants to correct what they felt was wrong from a place that is now...I will say frozen in time. yes the 60s were dated but you cant change things anymore with the same product that has already had its time there.

They need to stop trying to change the past , instead look forward to a better tomorrow with fresh idea and do it with new characters than twerking legacy characters like Spock, Uhura, Pike, Chapel. Even the original Ortega was meant to be a male character but she is women here. Not saying this is a big bad thing but you could have just kept Ortega as a male character as Rodenberry planned.

Bruce Horak better have been begging and pleading to leave because, as a disabled person myself with hearing loss, I'm not going to even get into how bad it looks killing off the one disabled cast member on the show.

I'm handicapped as well (Cerebral Palsy); BUT I have ZERO issues with Hemmer's death as portrayed because it was done in a very meaningful way that served the character.

I'd rather see something done like this that does A LOT to serve the story (as well as remind us that serving in Starfleet is dangerous). He didn't die in a typical redshirt manner <--- and had they done it that way I would have been upset.

But yeah, I'm all for it, if and when it serves the story and is done well - and this was.
